Utilization of the infrared spectroscopy in the study of various iron oxides

Abstract:

Infračervená spektroskopie není široce využívána při stanovení anorganických sloučenin. Je proto vhodné zkoumat málo studované využití IR. Cílem této práce bylo využití infračervené spektroskopie při studiu oxidů železa. Pro měření bylo připraveno pět minerálů (hematit, magnetit, goethit, akagaenit a feroxyhyte). Tyto vzorky byly následně proměřeny pomocí infračervené spektroskopie třemi různými metodami (ATR, DRIFT, metoda KBr tablety). Cílem bylo zjistit, která metoda je pro daný minerál nejvhodnější, jestli se daný postup přípravy dá využít k přípravě standardu, a která navážka je při dané metodě nejvýhodnější. Bylo zjištěno, že pro stanovení hematitu, magnetitu a feroxyhytu je nejvýhodnější použít metodu KBr tablety s navážkou 1 mg. Pro goethit bylo zjištěno, že nejvýhodnější metodou pro stanovení tohoto minerálu je metoda DRIFT s navážkou 5 mg. Pro akagaenit bylo zjištěno, že nejvýhodnější metodou pro stanovení tohoto minerálu je metoda ATR. Na základě této práce byla vytvořena knihovna spekter a bylo zjištěno, že metoda infračervené spektroskopie se dá využít při stanovení oxidů železa.

Abstract:

Infrared spectroscopy is not widely used in determination of inorganic compounds. It is therefore usefull to examine such poorly studied usage of IR. The objective of this thesis was utilization of IR spectroscopy for study of iron oxides. For the purpose of the work, five minerals have been prepared (hematite, magnetite, goethite, akagaenite and feroxyhyte). These samples were analyzed using three different IR spectroscopy methods (ATR, DRIFT, KBr tablettes). The aim was to find out which method is the most suitable for each separate material, whether the way of preparation is also possible for the preparing of standard and what amount of studied sample is the most effective in given method. We found out that for the differentiation of hematite, magnetite and feroxyhyte, the best method is using KBr tablettes with 1 mg of mineral. For goethite the most effective method of identifying the mineral is DRIFT method with 5 mg of mineral. For akagaenit the most useful way of identifying the mineral is ATR method. A library of spectra has been created based on this work and it was found out that the IR spectroscopy is useful in identifying iron oxides.
