Detection of Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium in the intestinal content of domestic pigeons (Columba livia domestica) using RealTime PCR Method

Abstract:

Výskyt holubů domácích ve městech je dlouhodobým problémem. Jedním z hlavních rizik je přenos nemocí, trávicí trakt těchto ptáků je rezervoárem mikroorganismů vyvolávajících infekce. Onemocnění mohou být nebezpečná jen pro holuba nebo se mohou přenášet dál na divoce žijící ptactvo, chovy drůbeže, skotu, prasat i na člověka. Tato práce se zaměřuje na Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium, které vyvolává ptačí tuberkulózu. Spolu s dalšími bakteriemi Mycobacterium avium komplexu se podílí na vzniku mykobakterióz. Ověřovanou hypotézou práce bylo, že populace volně žijících holubů domácích (Columba livia domestica) v okolí Brna obsahuje ve vzorcích z trávicího traktu Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium a jsou tak rizikem jejího přenosu. Laboratorní část práce hypotézu nepotvrdila. Přesto z literární rešerše plyne, že holubi jsou zdravotním rizikem.

Abstract:

The presence of domestic pigeons in urban areas has been a long-term issue. One of the primary risks associated with these birds is disease transmission. Their digestive tract serves as a reservoir for microorganisms that can cause infections. These illnesses may endanger pigeons themselves or can be transmitted further to wild birds, poultry, cattle, pigs, and even humans. This study focuses on Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium, which is responsible for avian tuberculosis. Alongside other bacteria within the Mycobacterium avium complex, it also contributes to mycobacteriosis. The initial hypothesis of this research was that the population of free-living domestic pigeons (Columba livia domestica) in the surroundings of Brno contains Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium in samples from their digestive tracts, potentially causing a risk of transmission. However, the laboratory part of the study did not validate this hypothesis. Nevertheless, existing literature suggests that pigeons are a health risk.
