Factors in the variation of /-s/ in the discourse of Canarian TV news presenters and politicians

Abstract:

The thesis studies the pronunciation of /-s/ segment in the speech of Canarian politicians and TV news presenters focusing on internal and external factors as well as linguistic attitudes and stylistic variation theories. In the study two main factors (or groups of factors) are observed: internal variables (such as contextual, distributional, etc.) and external variables (such as sex and origin of the speaker and type of discourse). The research proves that there is a significant difference between the speech of the TV presenters and politicians given that the first ones are more exposed to the linguistic attitudes existing in both, Canarian and Peninsular society. At the same time, there have been registered different tendencies in the internal variation; the presenters preferred more conservative pronunciation in final positions of words while the politicians showed higher tendency to eliminate the sound in these contexts. Based on the results, the thesis studies and evaluates three models used in stylistic variation analyses and chooses the speaker design theory as the most relevant for the interpretation of data. At the same time, the study demonstrates that the presenters are not completely free in their linguistic choices as the speakers seem to be highly restricted by their own and also by their community’s linguistic attitudes. The appended case studies demonstrate considerable qualitative difference among the presenter group. At the same time, in the study, individual quantitative differences among presenters have been found. These findings should be used as a baseline for further academic research in the realm of individual attitudes, lifestyle, social networks, contact with media, etc. with the purpose of finding factors that can cause given variation.

Abstract:

Dizertačná práca sa venuje výslovnosti segmentu /-s/ v reči kanárskych politikov a moderátorov televíznych novín so zameraním na vnútorné a vonkajšie faktory, rovnako ako na jazykové postoje a teórie štylistickej variácie. V štúdii sa rozoberajú dva hlavné faktory (prípadne skupiny faktorov): vnútorné premenné (ako fonický kontext, či distribúcia) a vonkajšie faktory (ako rod, pôvod hovoriaceho a typ diškurzu). Výskum dokazuje, že existuje významný rozdiel medzi rečou moderátorov a politikov, keďže prvá zmienená skupina je výrazne ovplyvnená jazykovými postojmi existujúcimi v španielskej spoločnosti. Zároveň štúdia odhaľuje, že každá skupina hovoriacich vykazuje iné tendencie pri vplyve vnútorných premenných na variáciu v reči. Zatiaľ čo moderátori vykazujú konzervatívnejšie realizácie fonému v koncových pozíciách, politici, naopak v týchto pozíciách častejšie aspirujú, alebo úplne eliminujú danú hlásku. Na základe výsledkov, štúdia ďalej hodnotí tri základné modely využívané v analýze štylistickej variácie, z ktorých vyberá teóriu „Speaker Design“ ako tú najrelevantnejšiu pre interpretáciu zozbieraných dát. Dopĺňa však, že pri vysvetľovaní štylistickej variácie je nutné zohľadniť spoločenské reštrikcie, akými sú napríklad jazykové postoje, ktoré do istej miery obmedzujú jazykové chovanie hovoriaceho. Dizertačná práca je zakončená tromi prípadovými štúdiami, ktoré rozoberajú kvalitatívne rozdiely medzi samotnými moderátormi. Táto kvalitatívna analýza -spolu s kvantitatívnym výskumom- poukazuje na zásadné rozdiely predovšetkým v rámci diškurzu v televíznych novinách a zdôrazňuje dôležitosť ďalšieho výskumu, zameraného na individuálne postoje hovoriacich, ich životný štýl, kontakt s médiami, apod., s cieľom odhaliť faktory, ktoré dané rozdiely spôsobujú.
