Women managers and their careers from the perspective of gender

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská diplomová práce tématicky spadá pod problematiku uplatnění žen na trhu práce, konkrétně se zaměřuje na situaci žen ve vyšších a nejvyšších manažerských pozicích, neboť se jedná o oblast, která se pojí s velkou mírou moci, prestiže a rozhodování, a současně s největšími platovými rozdíly mezi muži a ženami. Úvod práce je věnován objasnění základních teoretických pojmů, které se k pojetí genderu vážou. V další části jsou podrobně představeny koncept genderového univerza Sandry Harding, koncept genderované organizace Joan Acker a koncept seriality genderu Iris Marion Young. S využitím informací z Českého statistického úřadu jsou zmapovány základní údaje o situaci na trhu práce s odkazem na ukazatele medián mezd, Gender Pay Gap a kvalifikace zaměstnání KZAM. Metodou sekundární analýzy dat jsou dále zanalyzovány hlavní faktory, které ovlivňují pracovní kariéru žen v organizacích, podkladem pro uchopení tématu jsou studie zabývající se genderem v managementu. Cílem práce je shrnutí informací publikovaných ve výzkumech na téma diskriminace žen na pracovištích a mechanismy jejich exkluze na řídících pozicích, jejich analýza, vyvození závěrů a jejich aplikování na zvolené teoretické koncepty Harding, Acker a Young.

Abstract:

In general terms, the present bachelor thesis deals with the issue of women’s integration in the labour market. In particular, it focuses on the situation of women in middle and senior management positions for these are characterized by a greater access to power, prestige and decision making and reflect, at the same time, the most evident salary difference between men and women. In the introduction to the thesis, several fundamental theoretical terms relating to the understanding of gender are clarified. In the following part, a more detailed explanation of other relevant concepts is given. The most significant ones treated are, for instance, the concept of gendered universe by Sandra Harding, the concept of gendered organisation by Joan Acker or the understanding of gender as seriality by Iris Marion Young. Based on the data assembled by the Czech Statistical Office, some basic information describing the situation in the labour market are presented. This is done with reference to the Gender Pay Gap and the classification of occupations (KZAM). Furthermore, the method of secondary data analysis is used to examine the main agents effecting women’s working career in diverse establishments. Background information for the chosen topic are provided by studies concerned with gender in management. The aim of the present thesis is to summarize the data published in research works which relate to the discrimination of women at workplace and to the mechanisms of their exclusion from leadership. Those data are further analyzed, conclusions drawn and then applied to the chosen theoretical concepts of Harding, Acker and Young.
