Abstract:

Práce se zabývá analýzou dvou přídavných jmen high a tall, která jsou obecně považována za synonyma. Tato kvalitativní analýza se zaměřuje na konkrétní podstatná jména, se kterými high a tall tvoří nominální kolokace. Ačkoliv lze tato přídavná jména považovat za synonymní, nelze je použít ve všech kontextech stejně. Práce tedy zjišťuje, jaká jsou jejich kolokační omezení s konkrétními podstatnými jmény a hledá rozdíly v jejich použitích. Výzkum je založen na Britském národním korpusu.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to examine two adjectives high and tall, which are generally regarded as synonyms. The focus of this qualitative analysis is on concrete nouns with which the two adjectives form adjective-noun collocations. Although high and tall are synonymous, they are not interchangeable in all contexts. Thus the thesis concentrates on finding out what their collocational restrictions with concrete nouns are and on searching for differences in their uses. The research is based on the British National Corpus.
