Urban Toponyms of Industrial Cities before and after 1989 - Illustrated with the Cities of Ostrava and Miskolc

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá proměnou urbanonymie ve dvou vybraných středoevropských městech, Ostravě a Miskolci (Maďarsko). Obě města charakterizuje staletá přítomnost těžkého průmyslu, pak v důsledku deindustrializace zlom těchto tradic v 80. a 90. letech 20. století. Zaměřujeme se na změny standardizovaných urbanonym v obou městech: soubory uličních názvů získané z mapových pramenů před a po roce 1989 podrobujeme motivační analýze se zvláštním zřetelem k industriálním motivům. Revoluce v roce 1989 následovala vlna přejmenování ulic jak v Česku, tak v Maďarsku - cílem bude zjistit, jestli tyto proměny odrážely změny nejen politické, ale i ekonomické.

Abstract:

This master's thesis focuses on shifts in urban toponyms in two Central European cities, Ostrava (the Czech Republic) and Miskolc (Hungary). The presence of heavy industry has characterised these cities for centuries, but their traditions were ruptured by processes of deindustrialisation in the 80s and 90s of the 20th century. We examine changes in standardised toponyms of both cities: we subject sets of street names from maps to motivational analysis with a special focus on industrial motives. Revolutions in both countries in 1989 were followed by a wave of renaming streets - we aim to determine if these shifts reflect changes in the economical system besides changes in political regimes.
