Passenger railway transport in peripheral regions

Abstract:

Osobní železniční doprava představuje jednu ze základních dopravních alternativ. Její efektivita se projevuje zejména v oblastech s velkými koncentracemi obyvatelstva, kde je obecně poptávka po dopravě vysoká. Ve venkovských, a zvláště periferních, oblastech se její efektivita snižuje z důvodu disperzní struktury osídlení. Se změnami ve vývoji společnosti České republiky, které byly doprovázeny výrazným růstem automobilizace, docházelo v minulosti i nadále dochází mnohdy k poklesu zájmu o osobní železniční dopravu. Vyústěním této situace může být rušení málo vytížených železničních spojů či dokonce celkové zrušení železniční dopravy na některých tratích. Proto je cílem této diplomové práce zabývat se vývojem osobní železniční dopravy v periferních regionech a hodnocením jejího současného stavu. K tomu jsou na základě diskuse literatury vybrány dva konkrétní vzájemně odlišné periferní regiony. Výzkum práce je založen na kvantitativních analytických metodách. Jedná se o datovou analýzu vývoje obslužnosti železniční dopravou a dotazníkové šetření mezi obyvateli zájmových oblastí. Ze zjištěných výsledků je zjevné, že osobní železniční doprava vykazuje v obou zájmových periferiích velmi podobnou situaci. Hraje roli spíše doplňkového dopravního modu, který je využíván obyvateli převážně na nepravidelné úrovni. Dle vývoje dopravní obslužnosti sice došlo k posílení a stabilizaci situace oproti minulosti, nicméně obecný zájem obyvatel o železniční dopravu spíše upadá.

Abstract:

Passenger railway transport is one of the basic transport alternatives. Its effectiveness is particularly evident in areas with large population concentrations where transport demand is generally high. In rural, and especially peripheral, areas its efficiency is reduced due to the dispersed settlement pattern. With the changes in the development of society in the Czech Republic, which have been accompanied by a significant increase in motorization, there has been and often continues to be a decline in interest in passenger railway transport. This situation may result in the cancellation of lightly used rail links or even the total cancellation of railway transport on some lines. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to examine the development of passenger railway transport in peripheral regions and to assess its current state. For this purpose, two specific mutually distinct peripheral regions are selected on the basis of a discussion of the literature. The research of the thesis is based on quantitative analytical methods. These include data analysis of the development of railway transport services and a questionnaire survey among the inhabitants of the regions of interest. From the results, it is clear that passenger railway transport shows a very similar situation in the two peripheries of interest. It plays the role of a rather complementary transport mode, which is mainly used by the inhabitants on an irregular basis. According to the development of transport services, although the situation has been strengthened and stabilized compared to the past, the general interest of the population in railway transport is rather declining.
