Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá výzvami vůči patriarchální společnosti, které jsou obsaženy v románech Jana Eyerová a Šarlatové písmeno. Práce se zaměřuje na hlavní hrdinky, Janu a Hester, které představují protipól ke společensky akceptovanému ideálu ženy, jež je oddaná práci v domácnosti a je si plně vědoma svého podřízeného postavení ve společnosti. Jana a Hester jsou, navzdory kulturní a časové vzdálenosti, velmi podobné osobnosti, protože si dokáží uchovat svoji důstojnost a nezávislost. Cílem práce je analyzovat nekonvenční postoje hlavních hrdinek vůči patriarchální společnosti a současně poukázat na úzké spojení mezi názory Jany a Hester a jejich autorů, Charlotte Brontëové a Nathaniela Hawthorna.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with challenges towards patriarchal society in Jane Eyre and The Scarlet Letter. The thesis focuses on the main heroines of the novels, Jane and Hester, who represent the striking contrast to the socially acceptable ideal of a domesticated woman, who is fully aware of her subordinate position in the society. Jane and Hester, their cultural and temporal distance notwithstanding, are very much alike, since they manage to maintain their dignity and independence. The aim of the thesis is to analyze unconventional approaches of the main heroines to patriarchal society and, concurrently, to depict the close link between the attitudes of Jane and Hester and their authors, Charlotte Brontë and Nathaniel Hawthorne.
