Biblical illustrations in the second half of the 19th century

Anotácia:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá biblickými ilustracemi v druhé polovině 19. století, které vytvořili přední umělci – ilustrátoři Gustave Doré, Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld a Frederic Leighton. Ilustrace jsou v práci komparovány mezi sebou a jsou zde porovnávány rozdíly v přístupech těchto umělců a také to, jak dané ilustrace vyjadřují konkrétní příběhy z bible. Dále se práce zabývá tím, jaký dopad mohly mít na vznik těchto ilustrací sekularizace a industrializace. Z hlediska sekularizace je pozornost zaměřena na to, jestli a jaký vliv mohla mít soudobá archeologie na dané ilustrace. V rámci industrializace práce poukazuje na vývoj reprodukčních technik, a jak mohly rozšíření biblických ilustrací napomoci nové duplikační metody, vynalezené v rámci 19. století.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with biblical illustrations in the second half of the 19th century, created by leading artists - illustrators Gustave Doré, Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld and Frederic Leighton. The thesis compares the illustrations to each other and compares the differences in the approaches of these artists as well as how the illustrations express specific stories from the Bible. Furthermore, the work deals with what impact secularization and industrialization could have had on the creation of these illustrations. From the point of view of secularization, attention is focused on whether and what influence contemporary archeology could have had on the given illustrations. Within the framework of industrialization, the thesis points to the development of reproduction techniques, and how new duplication methods invented in the 19th century could have helped the spread of biblical illustrations.
