The Effect of Sentiment on Returns of Bitcoin

Abstract:

This diploma thesis investigates the effect of sentiment on the returns of the cryptcurrency Bitcoin. The theoretical part defines market sentiment and its methods of measurement. Then, the basic concepts of the cryptocurrency Bitcoin and its overview of historical development are described. Next part of the thesis deals with the literature which study the effects of sentiment on Bitcoin. The practical part analyzes the relationship between sentiment and Bitcoin returns using four sentiment indicators. Selected sentiment indices are VIX, AAII, SI (constructed on the basis of the FEARS index) and the Crypto Fear and Greed index. Vector autoregression models on daily and weekly data are used in this work. The relationship between sentiment and Bitcoin is analyzed using Granger causality and the impulse response function. The results of the analysis on daily time series indicate a significant causal effect of sentiment (measured by VIX, SI, Crypto Fear and Greed indices) on the returns of Bitcoin. This causality has not been shown to be significant on weekly data. The achieved results are summarized in the conclusion of the thesis.

Abstract:

Táto diplomová práca skúma vplyv sentimentu na výnosy kryptomeny Bitcoin. V teoretickej časti je zadefinovaný pojem trhového sentimentu a jeho spôsoby merania. Ďalej sú popísané základné pojmy ohľadne kryptomeny Bitcoin a je uvedený stručný prehľad jeho historického vývoju. Následne je časť práce venovaná rešeršu literatúry zaoberajúcej sa štúdiám vplyvov sentimentu na Bitcoin. V praktickej časti je analyzovaný vzťah medzi sentimentom a výnosmi Bitcoinu pomocou štyroch indikátorov sentimentu. Vybranými indexmi sentimentu sú VIX, index spoločnosti AAII, SI (skonštruovaný na základe indexu FEARS) a index Crypto Fear and Greed. V práci sú použité modely vektorovej autoregresie na denných a týždenných dátach. Vzťah medzi sentimentom a Bitcoinom je analyzovaný pomocou Grangerovskej kauzality a funkcie impulznej odozvy. Výsledky analýzy denných časových radov poukazujú na signifikantné kauzálne pôsobenie sentimentu (meraného indexmi VIX, SI, Crypto Fear and Greed) na výnosy Bitcoinu. Na týždenných dátach sa táto kuazalita nepreukázala ako významná. V závere sú zhrnuté dosiahnuté výsledky.
