Fate of currently used pesticides in the atmospheric environment

Abstract:

Současně používané pesticidy (CUPs) představují celosvětově použití průměrně 2,6 milionu tun ročně a tvoří chemicky velmi rozmanitou skupinu sloučenin. V důsledku toho jsou vystaveny složitým procesům, které ovlivňují jejich osud v životním prostředí, včetně jejich vstupu do atmosféry. Klíčové aspekty jejich chování v atmosféře však zůstávají neúplně pochopené z důvodu nedostatku empirických důkazů. Disertační práce zkoumá atmosférické procesy ovlivňující CUPs, včetně jejich vstupu do atmosféry, distribuce mezi plyn a částice, degradaci, depozici a dálkový transport. Zdůrazňuje současný stav výzkumu, zjištěné limity a mezery ve znalostech. Byly provedeny experimentální studie, které se snažily tyto mezery zaplnit. Monitorování CUPs v měřítku na kontinentální úrovni poskytl empirické důkazy, identifikující sloučeniny náchylné k dálkovému transportu atmosférou, stejně jako po-tenciálně perzistentní atmosférické CUPs. Studie v městském prostředí ve střední Evropě ukázala, že CUPs byly znovu uvolněny z půdy do atmosféry. Dále byla stanovena suchá depozice a související rychlosti depozice. Velikost distribuce CUPs sorbo-vaných na aerosoly byla stanovena na třech evropských lokalitách, což ukázalo na rozdíly ve velikostech distribuci aerosolů podle specifik lokalit. Dlouhodobá monitorovací data CUPs na venkovské lokalitě ve střední Evropě ukázala, že zjištěné úrovně odrážely národní vzorce použití. Kromě toho byla zkoumána distribuce CUPs mezi plynem a částicemi. Mnoho CUPs bylo nalezeno buď převážně sorbovaných na aerosolových částicích, nebo výhradně v plynné fázi, ale některé byly v procesu distribuce. Srovnání s existujícími distribučními modely mezi plynné a částicové fáze (GPP) přineslo uspokojivé výsledky pouze pro několik sloučenin. Zjištění poskytují nové empirické důkazy a dále charakterizují procesy zapojené do atmosférického osudu CUPs. Nicméně emise, transport a distribuce zůstávají pro většinu zkoumaných CUPs nedostatečně charakterizovány. Budoucí výzkum by měl prozkoumat distribuci CUPs mezi plynem a částicemi, protože tento proces byl odhalen jako velmi vlivný při předpovídání jejich atmosférického a environmentá-lního osudu.

Abstract:

Current-use pesticides (CUPs) accounts for an annual average use of 2.6 million tons globally and form a chemically very diverse group of compounds. Accordingly, they are subjected to a complex variety of processes governing their environmental fates including entering the atmosphere. However, key aspects of their behavior in the ambient atmosphere, remain incompletely understood due to scarce empirical evidence. The dissertation examines atmospheric processes affecting CUPs, including entry into the atmosphere, gas-particle partitioning, degradation, deposition, and long-range transport. It highlights the current state of research, the limitations encountered and knowledge gaps. Experimental studies were implemented to try to fulfil those gaps. Continental scale monitoring of CUPs provided empirical evidence, identifying compounds prone to the long-range atmospheric transport, as well as potentially persistent atmospheric CUPs. Furthermore, a study in a Central European urban environment revealed that CUPs were re-emitted from the soil to the atmosphere. Additionally, dry deposition and associated deposition velocities were determined. The size distribution of CUPs sorbed to aerosols was determined at three European sites, showing site-specific differences in aerosol size distribution. Long-term monitoring data of CUPs; at a Central European rural site, showed that the levels encountered reflected their national use patterns. Moreover, gas-particle partitioning was investigated. Many CUPs were found either predominantly sorbed to aerosol particles or exclusively found in the gas-phase, some were partitioning. Comparison with existing GPP models yielded satisfactory results for only a few compounds. The findings provide new empirical evidence and further characterize the processes involved in the atmospheric fate of CUPs. However, emissions, transport and partitioning remain incompletely characterized for the majority of the CUPs studied. Future research should explore the CUPs gas-particle partitioning, as this process was revealed to be highly influential in predicting their atmospheric and environmental fate.
