Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the portrayal of the madwoman character in Gothic horror, both in its literary and cinematic form. The thesis focuses on Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw (1989), Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House (1959), and their respective film adaptations Jack Clayton’s The Innocents (1961) and Robert Wise’s The Haunting (1963).
