Adapting the fifth edition of D&D rules in the context of Baldur's Gate 3

Anotácia:

Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na komparativní analýzu pravidel a herního systému páté edice hry Dungeons & Dragons (dále jen 5e D&D) a jejich adaptace v digitální hře Baldur’s Gate 3. Práce provádí detailní srovnání klíčových herních prvků včetně bojového systému, tvorby postav a dalších aspektů, které jsou společné oběma herním prostředím. První část práce se věnuje samostatnému popisu herních systémů u obou her. V druhé části analýzy jsou zkoumány rozdíly a podobnosti mezi pravidly 5e D&D a jejich implementace v Baldur's Gate 3. Výzkum se opírá o analýzu herních mechanismů, průzkum literatury v podobě publikací pravidel jak 5e D&D tak hry Baldur’s Gate 3. Práce obsahuje i vlastní praktické experimenty a testování v rámci samotného hraní zmíněných her. Tato bakalářská práce přispívá k rozšíření poznatků o adaptaci stolní hry do digitálního prostředí a poskytuje užitečné perspektivy na komparaci konkrétních herních systémů. Výsledky této práce přinášejí hlubší pochopení rozdílů a shod mezi deskovou a digitální verzí D&D, což může být užitečné pro hráče, tvůrce her a výzkumníky v oblasti herních studií.

Abstract:

The bachelor‘s thesis focuses on a comparative analysis of the rules and game system of the fifth edition of Dungeons & Dragons (referred to as 5e D&D) and their adaptation in the digital game Baldur's Gate 3. The thesis performs a detailed comparison of key game elements including the combat system, character creation and other aspects common to both game environments. The first part of the thesis is devoted to a separate description of the game systems in both games. The second part of the analysis examines the differences and similarities between the rules of 5e D&D and their implementation in Baldur's Gate 3. The research is based on an analysis of the game mechanisms, a literature survey in the form of rule publications for both 5e D&D and Baldur's Gate 3. The thesis also includes actual hands-on experimentation and testing within the actual gameplay of the two games. This thesis contributes to the body of knowledge on the adaptation of board games to digital environments and provides useful perspectives on the comparison of specific game systems. The results of this thesis provide a deeper understanding of the differences and correspondences between the tabletop and digital versions of D&D, which can be useful for gamers, game designers, and game studies researchers.
