Proofs of inequalities using differential and integral calculus

Abstract:

Předložená práce je metodickým textem, který ukazuje diferenciální a integrální počet jako významný nástroj při dokazování elementárních nerovností. Je tvořena sbírkou rozličných úloh, při jejichž řešení jsou (často ne příliš obvyklým způsobem, avšak efektivně) využívány prostředky matematické analýzy. Text je členěn celkem do tří kapitol a dále do patnácti podkapitol dle užitých metod, přičemž v úvodu každé z nich jsou shrnuty teoretické poznatky a vyloženy potřebné souvislosti. V~první kapitole je popsáno, jak lze při dokazování různých typů nerovností využít monotonii příslušné funkce. Druhá kapitola se zabývá těmi metodami, při jejichž řešení využíváme konvexnosti, resp. konkávnosti funkce a její podstatnou část tvoří aplikace tzv. Jensenovy nerovnosti. Třetí kapitola předkládá příklady a úlohy řešené pomocí určitého integrálu, přičemž její poslední podkapitola je věnována průměrům integrálního typu. Řešení všech zařazených úloh jsou podrobně vyložena a často doplněna poznámkami a komentáři.

Abstract:

The submitted work is a methodical text which presents differential and integral calculus as a significant tool of proving elementary inequalities. It consists of various problems and its solutions in which we can use (mostly in unusual way) mathematical analysis. The work is divided into three chapters and fifteen sections according to used methods. At the beginning of each section, necessary theoretical results are summarized. In Chapter~1, proofs of inequalities are done by using the monotonicity of appropriate functions. The use of this fundamental function property is presented by numerous examples divided into particular sections. Chapter 2 deals with applications of convexity or concavity. The main part of this chapter is connected with Jensen inequality. Chapter 3 contains examples and problems which are solved with the aid of definite integrals. The last section serves as a brief summary of the theory and results of mathematical means defined by definite integrals. Solutions of all the problems included in this text are worked out in detail and often added by supplementary remarks.
