Psychological consequences of homicide (Detection of experiences accompanying the act of killing among soldiers of combat units, their causes and consequences)

Abstract:

Není pochyb o tom, že odebrání života jedné bytosti bytostí druhou, je cosi nepřirozeného a všemi kulturami zakázaného. Přesto jsou však okamžiky, kdy se tak děje legálně. Takovou situací je válka. Jaké to je, pokud voják zabije nepřítele, co prožívá a proč? Práce shrnuje výsledky více než desetiletého studia této problematiky. Přináší výsledky šetření prováděných s americkými veterány zejména z vietnamské války a chorvatskými veterány z války o nezávislost doplněné o názory českých vojáků působících v misi ISAF v Afghánistánu. Metodou výzkumu jsou řízené rozhovory s následným kvalitativním zpracováním. Výsledkem je zachycení emocí, postojů, vztahů a obav vztažený k oné nejzákladnější roli vojáka, tedy státem placeného a situačně, od břemena morálních zásad osvobozeného zabijáka. Pro pochopení mentálního stavu vojáka v boji zavádí autor pojem "válečné Self". Práce též poukazuje na vliv zabití a prožitků s tím spojených na poválečný stav veteránů.

Abstract:

There is no doubt that withdrawal of human life by another being, is something unnatural and forgiven by all cultures. Yet there are moments when homicide is legal. War is such situation. What and why a soldier experiences when he kills an enemy? The presentation summarizes the results of more than ten years authors' interest in this area. It brings the results of investigations carried out with American veterans of the Vietnam War and Croatian independent war´s veterans in particular with the complementary views of Czech soldiers operating in the ISAF mission in Afghanistan. The method of research is guided qualitative interviews with subsequent processing. The result is hit the emotions, attitudes, relationships and concerns related to the basic role of that soldier. It is killer paid by state, situationally freed from the moral burden. To understand the mental state of a soldier in combat, the author introduces the term "War Self". The work also points to the impact of the killings and experiences associated with the post-war status of the veterans.
