Happiness for Sale - Consumption as a Tool for Achieving Happiness?

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se věnuje pocitu štěstí jako subjektivní a zcela individuální záležitosti. Štěstí je obtížně měřitelné a jeho zdroje tkví jak v materiálních hodnotách, tak v hodnotách tradičních. Interpretované výzkumy prokázaly, že ekonomický blahobyt je mylně zaměňován za zdroj štěstí. Práce se proto věnuje konzumní společnosti, ve které mají marketingová poselství velkou účinnost, a využívají heslo štěstí s cílem ztotožnit spotřebitelům tento pocit s produktem, který nabízejí. Důvod je bezesporu produkt prodat a dosáhnout zisku. Marketingoví odborníci se ve většině případů snaží, prostřednictvím manipulace, lidi svádět k materiální spotřebě a ovlivnit jejich životní styl, myšlení a postoje. V práci se soustředím na dvě marketingové kampaně, pomocí kterých se snažím přiblížit, jakým způsobem je heslo štěstí využíváno v konkrétních reklamních strategiích. Každá měla zcela odlišnou komunikační strategii- první lákala k hédonismu a vyznávání hodnot materiálních, druhá k tradičním hodnotám- rodině a přátelství. Na základě zjištěných poznatků jak z teoretické oblasti, tak z marketingové, konstatuji, že je určitý rozpor mezi výsledky interpretovaných výzkumů a stále velké účinnosti povrchních marketingových sdělení, které ztotožňují spotřebu s pocity štěstí.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the idea of happiness being a subjective and very individual experience. Happiness is very difficult to measure with its source lying both in material values as well as more traditional merits. The surveys that were interpreted showed that economic prosperity is mistaken as being a source of happiness. This is why there are a lot of efforts in our current consumerist society devoted to creating marketing messages which combine the idea of happiness with the ultimate goal of associating this feeling with products that companies offer. The reason behind this is undoubtedly to sell the product and try to make a profit. In the majority of cases, marketing experts try to tempt people into material consumption as well as influence their lifestyle, mindset and attitudes. In this work, there is a focus on two marketing campaigns which I will demonstrate how the idea of happiness is used in their advertising strategies. Each had a different communication strategy – the first attracted customers based on the idea of hedonism and the value of material goods, while the other focused on more traditional values like family and friendship. On the basis of my findings both from the theoretical and marketing fields, I believe that there is a clear contradiction between the results interpreted in the survey and the large amount of success seen in superficial marketing messages which equate consumption with the feeling of happiness.
