Orthorexia nervosa or unhealthy obsession with healthy eating

Abstract:

Cíl: Diplomová práce se zabývá poměrně neprozkoumaným konceptem orthorexia nervosa (Bratman, 1997), který lze definovat jako patologickou fixaci na zdravé stravě. Dosavadní poznatky naznačují, že koncept úzce souvisí nejen s obsedantně kompulzivní poruchou, ale i s poruchami příjmu potravy. Cílem kvantitativního výzkumu proto bylo sledovat fenomén orthorexie nervosa v kontextu vybraných psychologických charakteristik, které by mohly být pro jeho vznik relevantní a které se zároveň ověřují jako významné pro vznik poruch příjmu potravy a obsedantně kompulzivní poruchy. Sledovány byly souvislosti s citovou vazbou a dále vybranými osobnostními charakteristikami jako je sebehodnocení (včetně subjektivního vnímání fyzické atraktivity), depresivita a perfekcionismus. Sledovány byly i případné souvislosti orthorexie nervosy se sociodemografickými údaji (věk, pohlaví, vzdělání atd.). Dalším z cílů bylo vytvoření české verze a ověření psychometrických vlastností dotazníku na měření orthorexie nervosy ORTO-15, který dosud nebyl ve výzkumech v českém prostředí aplikován. Metoda: Výzkumný vzorek studie tvořilo 659 respondentů ve věku 20 – 45 let. Ve studii byla použita česká verze metody na měření míry orthorexie nervosy (ORTO-15), metoda na měření citové vazby (ECRS) metoda na měření míry deprese (Beck Depression Inventory II), perfekcionismu (Multimenzionální škála perfekcionismu), sebehodnocení (Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale) a fyzické atraktivity (The Estimating Attractiveness Scale). Výsledky: Výsledky potvrdily statisticky významné slabé až středně silné pozitivní vztahy mezi orthorexií nervosou a depresivitou, celkovým perfekcionismem a celkovou úzkostností. Statisticky významný slabý negativní vztah byl zjištěn mezi orthorexií nervosou a sebehodnocením stejně jako mezi orthorexií nervosou a subjektivně vnímanou fyzickou atraktivitou. Ve studii se ukázala slabá až středně silná statisticky významná pozitivní souvislost mezi orthorexií nervosou a pohlavím, sportem, alternativní stravou, dietou na snížení váhy a zdravotní dietou a bydlištěm. Statisticky významná, ale negativní souvislost se projevila ve vztahu mezi orthorexií nervosou a věkem, věkem nejmladších potomků a tím, zda má respondent partnera a bydlí s ním ve společné domácnosti. Výsledky regresního modelu ukázaly, že významnými prediktory orthorexie nervosy jsou depresivita, perfekcionismus a subjektivní vnímání fyzické atraktivity. Z kontrolovaných sociodemografických proměnných se jako statisticky významný prediktor výskytu orthorexie nervosy projevilo pohlaví, frekvence sportování, alternativní strava, dieta na snížení váhy, dieta ze zdravotních důvodů, bydliště a věk. Regresní model vysvětloval 28,5% rozptylu, větší rozptyl orthorexie nervosy (R2 = 23,3%) vysvětlovaly sociodemografické charakteristiky než námi zvolené prediktory (R2 = 5,2%).

Abstract:

Objective: The thesis deals with not enough explored orthorexia nervosa concept, which can be defined as a pathological fixation on healthy diet. The current findings suggest that the concept closely relates not only to obsessive compulsive disorder, but also to eating disorders. Therefore the objective of quantitative research was to observe the orthorexia nervosa phenomenon in the context of selected psychological characteristics that might be relevant for its establishment and that also being verified to be important for developing eating disorders and obsessive compulsive disorder. The links between emotional attachment, self-esteem (including the subjective perception of physical attractiveness) depressivity and perfectionism were investigated. Also, possible links between Orthorexia nervosa and sociodemographic data (age, sex, education, etc.) were monitored. Another goal was to create a Czech version of the questionnaire measuring nervosa Orthorexia nervosa ORTHO-15 and verify the psychometric properties (ORTHO-15 has never been applied in research in the Czech environment. Method: The research sample of the main study was composed of 659 respondents at the age of 20-45. The study uses a Czech version of a method to measure the degree of Orthorexia nervosa (ORTHO-15), a method for measuring emotional ties (ECRS), a method to measure the level of depression (Beck Depression Inventory II), perfectionism (Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale), self-esteem (Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale) and physical attractiveness (The Estimating attractiveness Scale). Results: The results confirmed a statistically significant weak to moderate positive relationship between Orthorexia nervosa and depression, overall perfectionism and overall anxiety. Statistically significant weak negative relationship was found between Orthorexia nervosa and self-esteem as well as between Orthorexia nervosa and subjectively perceived physical attractiveness. The study shows mild to moderate statistically significant positive correlation between Orthorexia nervosa and sex, sports, alternative diet, diet to reduce weight, diet and place of residence. Statistically significant but negative correlation was reflected in the relationship between Orthorexia nervosa and age, the age of the youngest offspring. The results of the regression model showed that the significant predictors Orthorexia nervosa are depressive, perfectionism and subjective perception of physical attractiveness. Statistically significant predictor of Orthorexia nervosa from controlled sociodemographic variables showed gender, frequency of sports, alternative diets, diet for weight reduction, diet for health reasons, age and place of residence. The regression model explained 28.5% of the variance, greater variance of Orthorexia nervosa (R2 = 23.3%) explain the socio-demographic characteristics in comparaison with our chosen predictors (R2 = 5.2%).
