Factors forming masculine social identity: Presentation of masculinities in Bravo and Maxim magazines

Abstract:

Cílem práce je zjistit které formy maskulinity jsou prezentovány na stránkách vybraných lifestylových časopisů se zaměřením na mužského čtenáře a zjistit odlišnosti prezentace maskulinit v daných časopisech v závislosti na věkové kategorii čtenářů. V teoretické části práce se zabývám základní charakteristikou jednotlivých forem maskulinit a formováním mužské identity. Sleduji roli médií v konstrukci reality, odlišnosti mediálních sdělení a jejich vliv na publikum. V praktické části mé práce provádím výzkum daných médií prostřednictvím kvantitativní obsahové analýzy se zaměřením na textovou část výzkumného vzorku. Zaměřuji se na postavení jednotlivých maskulinit a priority jejich prezentace v daných časopisech. V závěru práce provádím interpretaci získaných dat a vyhodnocení získaných informací.

Abstract:

The goal of the thesis is to find out which forms of masculinity are presented on the pages of chosen lifestyle magazines focused on male readers and determine the differences of the masculinity presentation in the magazines according to the age categories of the readers. In the theoretical part of the thesis I deal with the basic characteristics of single forms of masculinity and formation of the masculine identity. I watch the role of media in the construction of the reality, the differences of media communication and their effect on the audience. In the practical part of my thesis I conduct research of the chosen media through quantitative content analysis aimed to the text part of the research sample. I focus on the positions of single masculinity and the priority of their presentation in the magazines. In the conclusion of my work I perform interpretation of the obtained data and evaluation of the obtained information.
