Dance for Camera: Movement as a narrative principle in the film Enter Achilles

Abstract:

Na počátku 90. let vzniká nový žánr Dance for camera, který klade důraz na tanečně-pohybové sdělení herců. Přestává využívat možnosti dialogu a nahrazuje ho tanečním a gestickým vyjádřením. Obrací se tak zpět ke způsobům komunikace éry němého filmu a navazuje na předchozí zkoumání vztahu tance (rytmizovaného pohybu) a filmu. Práce má za cíl definovat filmové prostředky slouží k transformaci pohybových choreografií pomocí filmového umění. Jejich existenci a vztahy zkoumá na základě neoformalistické analýzy filmu Enter Achilles od nizozemské režisérky Clary van Gool. Při analýze vychází z práce filmového teoretika Erina Brannigana a odhaluje skupinu znaků, které odlišují tento žánr od ostatních. Na jejich základě se pak věnuje zkoumání způsobu jakým pohyb ovlivňuje styl a vyprávění filmu.

Abstract:

The new film genre Dance for camera, originating in early 1990’s, puts emphasis on dance movement as actors’ medium of expression. Dance figures and gestures in this genre replace usual dialogic expression. It represents a return to the means of communication of the silent era and at the same time a continuation of earlier experiments in terms of a relation between dance (as rhythmic movement) and film. This thesis aims to define the cinematic techniques which serve to transform choreography of movement by means of film art. The study of such techniques and means is based on neoformalist analysis of the film Enter Achilles by a Dutch director Clara van Gool and is theoretically grounded in works of the film theorist Erin Brannigan. It reveals a set of characteristics and signs which make the genre unique. This set is then used to examine the influence of movement over stylistic and narrative aspects of film.
