Mental Well-Being Scale in the Czech context

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce zkoumá možnosti použití Warwick-Edinburghské škály mentálního blaha v prostředí České republiky. Její vhodnost pro českou populaci je zkoumána na základě primárních dat získaných v roce 2012 na nereprezentativním, ovšem velmi početném souboru. Práce je rozdělena do tří částí. První část se zabývá teoretickou základnou, kde je prozkoumán a konceptualizován pojem mentální blaho tak, aby bylo možné definovat, co přesně zmíněná škála měří. Druhá část je pro tuto práci stěžejní. Zkoumá možnosti použití škály v České republice na základě statistických analýz provedených v programu SPSS. Výsledky těchto analýz ukazují, že škála mentálního blaha nemůže být pro daný výběrový soubor přijata v původní podobě. Neprokázala se totiž její unidimenzionalita. Proto musela být škála pozměněna tak, aby se stala validním měřicím nástrojem. Poté již bylo zkoumáno, jak sociodemografické i další charakteristiky respondentů ovlivňují míru pociťovaného mentálního blaha. Tato meritorní analýza je třetí částí práce. Její výsledky ukazují, že hodnota mentálního blaha se sice mění dle očekávání v závislosti na finanční situaci respondentů, zjišťuje se však, že pociťování mentálního blaha se mění nejen v souvislosti s ekonomickými faktory, ale také například se vzděláním, či rodinným stavem. Pro kategorie mužů a žen nebyly v pociťovaném blahu pozorovány významné rozdíly. Podstatným závěrem této práce však není meritorní analýza, ale zjištění, že Warwick-Edinburghská škála mentálního blaha není podle dat primárního výzkumu studentů sociologie v původní podobě a v českém kontextu validním měřicím nástrojem.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis examines how can be the Warwick-Edinburgh mental well-being scale used in the Czech Republic. Suitability of this scale for the czech population is explored persuant to the primary research, which was conducted in 2012. This research is based on unrepresentative but comprehensive sample. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first one deals with the theoretical basis where is a term mental well-being explored and conceptualised. This is very important for a better understanding of what this scale exactly measure. The crucial part of this thesis is the second one. It examines possibilities of using the scale in the Czech Republic which is based on statistical analysis in the SPSS programme. The results of these analysis show that the mental well-being scale can not be used in the original version for our sample, because its unidimensionality has not been demonstrated. Due to the fact that the original version could not be used the scale had to be modified. Than we could use sociodemographic and other factors which influenced the measurement of the mental well-being. This meritory analysis is a third part of the thesis. The results of this part show that the value of a mental well-being correlate with financial situation of people, as we expected. But more impressive is that feelings about mental well-being are not only changed because of the economic factors but also due to other characteristics, for example education or marital status. There were not found differences between feelings of mental well-being for men and women. The meritory analysis is not a major result of this thesis. The most important are findings based on data from our research, which proved that in the czech conditions the Warwick-Edinburgh mental well-being scale is not applicable in the original form.
