Neo-romantic Image of the City in Paul Leppin’s Works and Especially Urban Fantasticism in the Novel Severins Gang in die Finsternis

Abstract:

The study deals with two novels Severinus Gang in die Finsternis and Die Thüren des Lebens, the drama Der Enkel des Golem, and two short stories Das Gespenst der Judenstadt and Das Haus am Ufer. The way of the text selection was influenced by the extent of urban factors involvement. “Infecting” the urban fantastic elements by Prag’s myth is created the specific poetics of these writings. Traditional moral dichotomy city-country fortified by the “fin de siècle generation” apocalyptic vision, existence of so discussed three sorts of social ghetto – the ghetto was firstly reflected in German literature by Leppin’s first-fruit Die Thüren des Legend (1901) - and finally the influence of “Golem’s city” irrational local factor contribute to German-Prague literature mythisation. The image of city in the Leppin’s works unwinds from ambivalent nature of the city. The characters are placed to the past and tragic background. Exteriors are characterized by general decline, scanty light, pathological colouring, rules and labyrinth. Decay/ephemerality influenced things as well as real and supernatural characters. The essay also adumbrates, but of course not completely, genesis and development of so called “illusive image of reality” (literary fiction), which is different from the empiric experience. This part of the essay contains the history of pre-romantic fantastic elements forming in literature, increasing of fantasticism in Romanticism and finally neo-romantic restoring of the traditional methods, which are also the source for Leppin’s poetics.

Práce zpracovává v názvu předeslané texty - romány Severinus Gang in die Finsternis a Die Thüren des Lebens, divadelní hru Der Enkel des Golem, dvě krátké povídky Das Gespenst der Judenstadt a Das Haus am Ufer. Při výběru textů sehrála roli míra „angažovanosti“ městského prvku. Specifická poetika těchto děl vzniká „infikováním“ prvků městského fantastična mýtem Prahy. Tradiční mravní dichotomie město-venkov, posílená apokalyptickými vizemi generace fin de siècle, existence tolik polemizovaného tzv. trojího ghetta, jež je v německé literatuře poprvé sensu stricto literárně reflektováno právě Leppinovou prvotinou z roku 1901 Die Thüren des Lebens a konečně působení iracionálního lokálního faktoru - „města Golema“, přispívá k mytizaci německé pražské literatury. Obraz města v Leppinově díle se odvíjí od ambivalentní povahy daného města. Své postavy umisťuje do minulých, často tragických kulis. Vnější prostor města charakterizuje všeobecný rozklad, sporé světlo, chorobná dvojbarevnost, řád a labyrint. „Tlení/pomíjivost“ zasahuje věci, postavy reálné i nadpřirozené. Tato práce přibližuje rovněž v adekvátním, nikoli vyčerpávajícím rozsahu, genezi a následný vývoj tzv. klamného obrazu skutečnosti, tedy literární fikce, jež se v různé míře liší od mimoliterární empirické skutečnosti. Strukturu tohoto oddílu vytváří úvodní střízlivé předromantické dějiny formování textů s prvky fantastična, následné romantické bujení fantastična a konečně novoromantické osvěžení tradičních postupů, z nichž čerpá i specifická poetika Leppinových děl.
