The Svevo's Carnival. The Humour in “La Coscienza di Zeno” Between the Yiddish Tradition, Laughter of Bergson and Freudian Witz

Abstract:

The essay pursues the question of humour in the work of the Trieste author Italo Svevo. A main part consists of an analysis of author’s best known novel Zeno's Conscience (La Coscienza di Zeno). It connects Svevo’s work with some essays published at the turn of the twentieth century. These are the works of S. Freud, H. Bergson and L. Pirandello. A considerable part is dedicated to an analysis of Svevo’s work from the perspective of Jewish humour. It finds a connection between themes and technique (or humoristic “mentality”) in Svevo´s novels and in anecdotes of the Yiddish tradition.

Práce se zabývá problematikou humorismu v díle terstského spisovatele Itala Sveva. Hlavní část patří analýze nejznámějšího autorova románu Vědomí a svědomí Zena Cosiniho (La Coscienza di Zeno). Pokouší se spojit Svevovo dílo s některými eseji o humorismu, publikovanými v období přechodu mezi devatenáctým a dvacátým stoletím. Jedná se o díla S. Freuda, H. Bergsona a L. Pirandella. Velký prostor je věnován analýze autorova díla z pohledu židovského humoru. Nachází spojení mezi tématy a technikou humoru (či humoristickou „mentalitou“) ve Svevových románech a anekdotách tradice jidiš.
