Gender representation and inequality in music industry in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Hlavním tématem této bakalářské práce je vnímání pozice ženských interpretek na české hudební scéně, konkrétně zda se v tomto prostředí potýkají s mužskou dominancí, objektivizací a genderovou stereotypizací. V teoretické části práce vymezuji základní pojmy jako feminismus a gender, věnuji se feministické antropologii a definuji feministickou teorii vzhledem k populární kultuře. Dále v práci identifikuji nejčastější překážky, se kterými se ženy v hudebním průmyslu setkávají a zmiňuji iniciativy řešící genderovou nerovnost v hudbě. V praktické části práce popisuji výzkumný vzorek, kterým bylo pět žen působících na české hudební scéně na různých pozicích, např. textařka, producentka, skladatelka. Nejdříve byly provedeny polo-strukturované rozhovory, se kterými jsem dále pracovala pomocí kódování a následného vytváření kategorií a subkategorií. Z výpovědí respondentek můžu tak díky aplikaci obsahové analýzy zachytit obsah dat a tematicky rozklíčovat, zda se respondentky setkávají s genderovou nerovností na hudební scéně a zda se tím pádem můj výzkum ztotožňuje s teoretickými východisky či nikoli.

Abstract:

The main topic of this bachelor's thesis is the perception of the position of female performers on the Czech music scene, specifically whether in this environment they face male dominance, objectification and gender stereotypes. In the theoretical part of the work I define basic concepts such as feminism and gender, deal with feminist anthropology and define feminist theory in relation to popular culture. Furthermore, in my work I highlight the most common obstacles that women face in the music industry and mention initiatives addressing gender inequality in music. In the practical part of the work I describe a research group of five women working on the Czech music scene in various positions, for instance lyricist, producer or composer. First, semi-structured interviews were collected, with which I continued to work using coding and subsequent creation of categories and subcategories. Thanks to the application of content analysis, I can capture the content of the data and thematically decipher whether the respondents encounters gender inequality on the music scene and whether or not my research identifies with the theoretical basis.
