Possibilities of using BMI for assessing body weight and body composition in juvenis boys

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá možnostmi využití Body Mass Indexu (BMI) pro hodnocení tělesné hmotnosti a tělesného složení u chlapců ve věku 15-18 let. Cílem práce bylo analyzovat vztah mezi hodnotami Body Mass Indexu a skutečným zastoupením tukové tkáně v organismu u chlapců ve věku 15-18 let. Ověřovali jsme, do jaké míry BMI odpovídá hodnotám tělesného složení stanoveným pomocí bioelektrické impedanční analýzy (BIA). Výzkumný soubor tvořilo celkem 693 chlapců ve věku 15-18 let. U všech respondentů byla zjištěna tělesná výška a tělesná hmotnost, na jejichž základě byl vypočten Body Mass Index. Současně bylo pomocí bioelektrické impedanční analýzy stanoveno procento tělesného tuku a množství viscerálního tuku. Získaná data byla statisticky zpracována v programu R. Analýza zahrnovala deskriptivní statistiku, korelační analýzu, neparametrický Kruskal- Wallisův test a lineární regresní analýzu. Výsledky ukázaly statisticky významný pozitivní vztah mezi BMI a procentem tělesného tuku (? = 0,522; p < 0,001) i mezi BMI a viscerálním tukem (? = 0,678; p < 0,001). Regresní analýza prokázala, že BMI vysvětluje 38,3 % variability procenta tělesného tuku a 51,8 % variability viscerálního tuku. Současně bylo zjištěno, že hodnoty tělesného tuku i viscerálního tuku se systematicky zvyšují s rostoucí kategorií BMI. Na základě výsledků lze konstatovat, že Body Mass Index může sloužit jako orientační ukazatel množství tukové tkáně v organismu u adolescentní populace. Současně však výsledky ukazují, že BMI nedokáže přesně zachytit individuální rozdíly v tělesném složení a pro přesnější hodnocení je vhodné jej doplnit metodami analýzy tělesného složení, například bioelektrickou impedanční analýzou.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis focuses on the possibilities of using the Body Mass Index (BMI) for assessing body weight and body composition in boys aged 15-18 years. The aim of the study was to analyze the relationship between Body Mass Index values and the actual proportion of body fat in boys aged 15-18 years. The study also evaluated the extent to which BMI corresponds to body composition values determined by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). The research sample consisted of 693 boys aged 15-18 years. Body height and body weight were measured in all participants and used to calculate the Body Mass Index. At the same time, the percentage of body fat and visceral fat were determined using bioelectrical impedance analysis. The collected data were statistically processed using the R software environment. The analysis included descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, the non- parametric Kruskal-Wallis test and linear regression analysis. The results showed a statistically significant positive relationship between BMI and body fat percentage (? = 0.522; p < 0.001) as well as between BMI and visceral fat (? = 0.678; p < 0.001). Regression analysis demonstrated that BMI explained 38.3 % of the variability in body fat percentage and 51.8% of the variability in visceral fat. Furthermore, the results showed that both body fat percentage and visceral fat values systematically increased with higher BMI categories. The findings indicate that Body Mass Index can be used as a simple and practical indicator for the basic assessment of body weight and body fat in adolescents. However, BMI does not fully capture individual differences in body composition, and therefore it should be complemented with additional methods of body composition analysis, such as bioelectrical impedance analysis.
