Illness as a Divine Punishment: Perceptions of Illness in the Christian Context until 18th century

Abstract:

Tématem bakalářské práce je koncept nemoci jako Božího trestu v křesťanském kontextu. Cílem první části práce je ukázat, jak toto pojetí bylo rozvíjeno v dílech významných představitelů křesťanského myšlení, jak západního, tak východního. Tito autoři se soustředili především na vliv prvotního hříchu a téma neposlušnosti člověka. V jejich dílech se také často objevují citace ze Starého zákona. Další oddíl práce se pak zabývá konkrétními chorobami (lepra, mor), které byly považovány za následek potrestání od Boha nejčastěji. Práce se soustředí na shody a rozdíly v jednotlivých hlediscích a posuny v celém vnímání této problematiky. Důležitá je změna směrem ke konkretizaci viníků a snaha zamezit trestu modlitbami a dalšími kajícnými obřady. V lidovém pojetí se také objevuje kritika společnosti. Od 17. století se postupně konkurentem náboženského vidění stává jiné chápání, které hledá přirozené příčiny nemoci.

Abstract:

This Bachelor Thesis is concerned with the concept of illness as a divine punishment within the Christian context. The first part aims to demonstrate how this approach has been developed in the works of key Christian thinkers, both western and eastern. These authors focused on the influence of original sin and man's disobedience. They often used quotations from the Old Testament. The next section analyzes individual diseases (leper, plague), which were most often understood as a consequence of divine punishment. The work concentrates on similarities and differences in the individual approaches and potential changes in the whole understanding of the issue. Change toward identifying the guilty is important, as is trying to prevent punishment through prayer and other penitential rites. We can find comments on the social conditions in the folk concept. Since the 17th century natural vision of illness has become a competitor to the religious view.
