On Cognitive Synonymy (A Case Study)

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce si dává za úkol porovnat významy tří sloves (start, begin and commence) jež jsou obecně považována za synonyma. O sémantickém vztahu synonym se pojednává v teoretické i v praktické části diplomové práce se zvláštním zaměřením na kognitivní synonyma. Cílem této práce je zjistit, zda vybraná slovesa splňují potřebné podmínky pro to, aby mohla být považována za kognitivní synonyma. V teoretické části jsou představeny mnohé lingvistické studie synonymity a kolokací. Zároveň je v něm věnována kapitola korpusu a jaho analytickým programům, jež umožnili vlastní výzkum v praktické části. Praktická část je rozdělena do dvou celků. Jako první jsou zde zkoumány slovníkové definice vybraných sloves, zatímco druhá část je věnována analýze Briského národního korpusu. Zaměřuje se především na kolokativní restrikce, jež umožňují náhled do kolokativního rámce jednotlivých sloves. Rovněž se zde porovnávají kolokace společné pro všechna tři slovesa za účelem prozkoumání jejich stylistického zabarvení. Celková analýza odhaluje fakt, že i přestože daná slovesa mají společný význam kognitivní, liší se v jejich významu kolokativním, stylistickém a také emotivním. Vzhledem k těmto skutečnostem je možné řadit slovesa start, begin a commence do skupiny kognitivních synonym.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s diploma thesis compares the meanings of three verbs (start, begin and commence) that are generally regarded as synonymous. The semantic relation of synonymy is dealt with in both the theoretical and the practical part with special attention paid to the notion of ‘cognitive synonymy‘. The aim of the thesis is to examine whether the selected verbs fulfil the conditions for being regarded as cognitive synonyms. The theoretical part follows general linguistic concepts with an emphasis on synonymy and collocations; and it also introduces corpora and its various analysis tools that enabled the actual research in the practical part of the thesis. The practical part is divided into two parts. First, I analyze the dictionary definitions of the verbs. Second, I examine occurrences of the verbs in the British National Corpus. Special attention is paid to the collocational restrictions of the verbs. This enables a clear insight into the differences in the collocative ranges of the verbs. I also compare collocations that are common for all three verbs and examine their various stylistic overtones. The analysis reveals that even though the verbs start, begin and commence share cognitive meaning, they differ in respect to their collocative, stylistic meaning and also affective meaning. Therefore, the verbs start, begin and commence fall within the group of cognitive synonyms.
