Through diversity towards meta-stability: on the relationship between permaculture and modernity

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá permakulturou jako specifickým viděním světa a jeho vztahem k principům modernity podle Petera Wagnera. Wagnerovo vymezení modernity se v konceptuálním aparátu pojí se Stieglerovou procesuální ontologií. Na základě kvalitativní analýzy knih o permakulturním zemědělství a organizaci společnosti, která tvoří páteř práce, předkládá práce interpretaci, podle níž představuje permakultura alternativní modernitu. K současné verzi modernity se staví kriticky a odmítavě. Skrz kvantitativní analýzu širšího výběru permakulturních knih práce dále ukazuje, že taková interpretace má potenciál zobecnitelnosti. Za použití teorie režimů hodnoty blíže analyzuje i způsoby, kterými se permakulturní texty rámují jako lepší alternativa. Ukazuje, že permakultura se prezentuje jako holistický, socioekonomický systém v souladu s místní přírodou. Produkce je prezentována jako ekologická, efektivní i trvale hojná – na rozdíl od té dnešní. Život v permakultuře pak knihy rámují jako svobodnější, autentičtější a pospolitější. Permakulturu představují jako pokrok k udržitelnější společnosti, kdy biologická i sociální rozmanitost zajišťují systémovou meta-stabilitu.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on permaculture as a particular worldview and its relation to principles of modernity according to Peter Wagner. Within the conceptual framework, Wagner’s definition of modernity is paired with Stiegler’s processual ontology. Following a qualitative analysis of books about agriculture and social organisation in permaculture, that makes up the core of the text, the treatise interprets permaculture as an alternative modernity, which treats contemporary modernity critically and dismissively. Furthermore, the thesis shows that this interpretation has a potential of generalizability based on a quantitative analysis of a larger pool of permacultural books. The self-framing of permaculture as a better alternative is more closely analysed with orders of worth theory. Permaculture presents itself as a holistic, socioeconomic system in harmony with local nature. Its productivity is painted as ecological, effective, and permanently bountiful – as opposed to contemporary production. The books further frame the life in permaculture as freer, more authentic and more cohesive. Permaculture is depicted as a progress towards a more sustainable society, where biological and social diversity ensures systemic meta-stability.
