Coal Mining and Climate Change in the Czech Republic: Two Cases of Media Narratives

Abstract:

Teploty celosvetovo stúpajú a planéta sa zohrieva. Tento efetk je do veľkej miery spôsobený antropogénnymi emissiami skleníkových plynov. Najväčším zdrojom emisií sú energetické systémy, ktoré spaľujú fosílne palivá. Palivom, ktoré vypúšťa najväčšie množstvo skleníkových plynov, je uhlie. Zníženie množstva svetových emisií nie je možné bez nahradenia uhlia ako paliva. Kým niektoré krajiny úspešne nahradili uhlie vo svojoich energetických mixoch, iné (vrátane Českej republiky) s touto výzvou naďalej bojujú. Aby bolo možné v tejto úlohe pokračovať, v demokratických krajinách je potrebné získať verejnú podporu, ktorá legitimizuje akcie politikov. Nie je to však iba využívanie uhlia, ktoré toto rozhodnutie ovplyvňuje. Spotreba uhlia je často podmienená domácou produkciou, ktorá stojí na začiatku celého reťazca. Na jeho konci je klimatická zmena spôsobená emisiami skleníkových plynov. Postoje verejnosti sú formované do veľkej miery médiami. Z tohoto dlvodou bude táto dizeračná práca skúmať , aké mediálne naratívy sa spájajú s ťažbou uhlia a klimatickou zmenou. Cieľom je preskúmať širšie implikácie spaľovania uhlia. Vybrané oblasti neboli extenzívne skúmané, predovšetkým v prostredí strednej a východnej Európy. Cieľom výskumu je explorácia vybraných oblastí prostredníctvom automatizovanej obsahovej analýzy. Teoreticky je práca zakotvená prostredníctvom modelov mediálnych efektov, predovšetkým modelu nastoľovania agendy. Výsledky ukazujú, že ťažba uhlia je v médiách prezentovaná ako ekonomická a politická otázka. Vzťah medzi ťažbou uhlia a globálnym otepľovaním v médiách absentuje. Globálne otepľovanie je prezentované predovšetkým prostredníctvom lokálnych i globálnych dopadov, ale menej prostredníctvom príčin či nástrojov zmierňovania dopadov či nástrojov adaptácie. Používanie uhlia nie je označené ako zdroj klimatickej zmeny. V českých médiách je viditeľná prítomnosť klimaskepticizmu, ktorý nastolil najmä český prezident Klaus.

Abstract:

The global temperature is rising, and the planet is warming. This effect is to a large extent caused by anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG). The largest sources of these emissions are energy systems burning fossil fuels. The fossil fuels which emits the most GHG is coal. Decrease of global GHG emissions is can’t be achieved without replacement of coal sources. While some countries successfully replaced coal in their energy mixes, others, including the Czech Republic, are still struggling with this complex task. It is necessary to obtain public support, which lends legitimacy to politicians and their actions, to proceed. It is not only coal utilization, which matters. It is conditioned by mining activities of domestic resources, which stand at the beginning of the energy production chain. The most important by-product of energy production from coal is climate change induced by GHG emissions. The position of public in democratic countries is shaped to a large extent by media. For this reason, the dissertation is going to examine, what narratives are associated with coal mining and climate change, in an attempt to investigate wider implications of the energy production from coal. These two areas have not been researched extensively and no research on situation in Central and Eastern Europe exists. The goal of the dissertation is to explore two chosen areas through utilization of automated content analysis. Theory of media effects, especially agenda-setting, is used to theoretically ground the exploration. Results suggest that coal mining is presented as an economic and political question. The nexus between global warming and coal mining is absent. Climate change is mostly presented through local and global impacts, but less through the discussion of causes and measures. Coal utilization in the energy system is not directly implicated. Climate scepticism is present in the media agenda thanks to the climate sceptic president.
