Relationship of personality characteristics to the life satisfaction in intellectually active and inactive seniors.

Abstract:

Studie se zabývá zjišťováním vztahu mezi osobnostními rysy, jejich hodnotami a schopností prožívání životní spokojenosti u intelektuálně aktivních a neaktivních seniorů. Výzkumný soubor zahrnuje 201 respondentů, z toho 64 mužů a 137 žen ve věkovém rozpětí 51 - 91 let. Celý výzkumný soubor je rozdělen do dvou skupin. Výzkumný soubor zahrnuje 139 intelektuálně aktivních seniorů a 62 intelektuálně neaktivních seniorů. Za účelem zjištění úrovně osobnostních rysů, je použit osobnostní dotazník BFI-44. Pro zjištění úrovně prožívané životní spokojenosti, je použita Škála životní spokojenosti (SWLS). Výběr respondentů dle preferovaného zájmu je motivován předpokladem rozdílné úrovně schopnosti prožívání životní spokojenosti. Výsledná zjištění uvedené studie vykazují nejsilnější vztah mezi schopností prožívání životní spokojenosti a osobnostních rysů Svědomitost a Přívětivost u celého výzkumného souboru. U intelektuálně aktivních seniorů jsme zjistili pozitivní vztah téměř ve všech osobnostních rysech se schopností prožívání životní spokojenosti, kromě osobnostního rysu Přívětivost, u kterého jsme zjistili nízkou úroveň vztahu mezi měřenými proměnnými. V negativním vztahu je pouze dimenze Neuroticismus. U souboru intelektuálně neaktivních seniorů jsme nezjistili významnější vztah mezi osobnostními rysy a schopností prožívání životní spokojenosti. Regresní analýzou byly potvrzeny osobnostní rysy jako prediktory životní spokojenosti ve výzkumném souboru intelektuálně aktivních seniorů. Osobnostní rysy vysvětlují společně 12,5 % variability rozptylu životní spokojenosti. V souboru intelektuálně neaktivních seniorů není model statisticky významný.

Abstract:

The study deals with the relationship between personality traits, their values and the ability to experience life satisfaction in intellectually active and inactive seniors. The research sample encompasses 201 respondents, including 64 men and 137 women aged 51 – 91. The entire research sample is divided into two groups. The research sample includes 139 intellectually active seniors and 62 intellectually inactive seniors. In order to determine the level of personality traits, the BFI - 44 Personality Questionnaire has been used. The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) has been used to determine the level of life satisfaction the seniors experience. The choice of respondents according to the preferred interest is motivated by the assumption of different levels of life satisfaction. The resulting findings of the study presented show the strongest relationship between the ability to experience life satisfaction and personality traits of Conscientiousness and Agreeableness in the entire research sample. We have found a positive relationship in almost all personality traits with the ability to experience life satisfaction in intellectually active seniors, in addition to the personality trait Agreeableness, in which we have found a low level of relationship between the variables measured. In the negative relationship there is only a dimension of neuroticism. We have not found any significant relationship between personality traits and the ability to experience life satisfaction in the group of intellectually inactive seniors. Personality traits as predictors of life satisfaction have been confirmed through regression analysis in the research sample of intellectually active seniors. Together, personality traits explain 12.5% variability of life satisfaction variance. The model is not statistically significant in the sample of intellectually inactive seniors.
