Cost-optimal AWS Deployment Configuration for Containerized Event-driven Systems

Abstract:

Táto diplomová práca má za cieľ nájsť cenovo optimálnu konfiguráciu pre beh containerizovaných, udalosťami riadených systémov v cloudovom prostredí. Motiváciou je, že takéto systémy je stále náročné navrhnúť, hlavne kvôli zložitým cenovým schémam, ktoré reflektujú vnútorné cloudové limity. Prvá časť práce predstavuje všeobecný kontext, do ktorého je práca zasadená, spolu s kľúčovými oblasťami, ktoré majú najväčší vplyv na výslednú cenu. Keďže táto práca je zameraná na AWS cloud, v jej ďalšej časti sú popísané AWS služby, ktoré ovplyvňujú celkovú cenu riešenia. Na základe týchto poznatkov je vytvorený systém rozhodovacích stromov, ktorého cieľom je pomôcť nájsť najefektívnejšie a cenovo najoptimálnejšie riešenie. Aplikovaním vytvorenej metodiky je navrhnutá AWS deployment konfigurácia, ktorá je následne implementovaná ako AWS prototyp infraštruktúrnej schémy, pre containerizované, udalosťami riadené systémy v prostredí AWS cloudu. Záver práce je venovaný celkovému vyhodnoteniu výkonu a ceny navrhnutého riešenia.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to find cost optimal deployment configuration for cloud hosted, containerized, non-uniformly utilized event driven systems. The motivation behind this thesis is that such systems are still challenging to be designed cost-efficiently, mostly because of complex pricing schemes that reflect cloud intrinsic limitations. First part of the thesis introduce the general context of cloud computing, together with the key areas of interest that have the biggest impact on the resulting costs. As this thesis is focused on the AWS cloud, in next part are described AWS services that contributes to the cost of proposed solution. Based on such gathered knowledge, a decision tree apparatus is introduced, aimed to help finding the most performant and cost-optimal solution. With an application of proposed methodology, AWS deployment configuration is designed and implemented as an infrastructure scheme prototype for running the event-driven containerized workloads in AWS. At the end, performance and cost of proposed solution is measured and confronted with the expectations.
