Comparison of visual effects in the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit series using analysis and questionnaire survey

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou technik, které byly použité při vytváření vizuálních efektů ve filmech Pán prstenů a Hobit. Popisuje rozdílný přístup tvůrců k vytvoření podobných triků za pomoci praktických nebo digitálních prostředků. Zaměřuje se především na tvorbu zmenšených a digitálních postav a vytváření okolního prostředí. Zmiňuje, jakým způsobem se technologie používala, a jak byla aplikována ve filmech. Praktická část bakalářské práce vyhodnocuje dotazníkové šetření, které má za úkol zjistit, jak znalci vizuálních efektů, fanoušci série a laická veřejnost vnímá scény s vizuálními efekty, které se objevují v podobných scénách v obou sériích. Dotazník prokázal, že většina respondentů bez ohledu na skupinu se přiklání k sérii Pán prstenů a praktickému zpracování efektů. Na druhou stranu výsledky ukázaly preferovaní digitálního zpracování postavy Gluma.

Abstract:

The thesis is concerned with technology analysis of the visual effects used in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Hobbit trilogy. It analyzes the creators' respective approaches in creating similar effects using practical or digital instruments. The analysis focuses primarily on the creation of downscaled and digital characters and the environment. It describes the way the technology was used and applied in these films. The practical part of this thesis evaluates the results of a questionnare whose task was to explore how visual effects experts, fans of the franchise and lay public perceive scenes of mutual resemblance in both films in which visual effects was used. The questionnare proves that the majority of respondents, regardless of the extent of their knowledge of visual effects, prefer Lord of the Rings trilogy and its use of practical effects. On the other hand, the results have shown the respondents' preference of the digitally conceived character of Gollum.
