Resurrected Girl, Speaking Dog, and the One Christ Jesus: Selected Passages from the Apocryphal Acts of Apostles in Evolutionary Behavioral Perspective

Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na několik teorií z oblasti kognitivních věd obecně a kognitivní vědy o náboženství zvláště a jejich potenciál pro interpretaci historických literárních pramenů. Literární prameny jsou reprezentovány třemi pasážemi z apokryfních skutků apoštolů. Východisko této práce představuje evolučně behaviorální perspektiva, z níž je nahlíženo na vztah mezi evolucí, historií a literaturou s ohledem na dobu vzniku vybraných pramenů. Ústřední čtvrtá až šestá kapitola postupně představuje některé kognitivní teorie rituálu, hypotézu o zapamatovatelnosti minimálně kontraintuitivních činitelů a koncept rozšířené kognice s odkazem na vybrané pasáže Skutků Janovýchi, Skutků Petrových a Skutků Pavlových. První z těchto kapitol nahlíží text jako zdroj informací o možném konkrétním rituálním jednání, které je možné interpretovat právě za využití kognitivních teorií rituálu. Následující kapitola se soustředí na text jako zdroj informací o šíření mentálních reprezentací, k čemuž je využita hypotéza o zapamatovatelnosti minimálně kontraintuitivních reprezentací. Šestá kapitola pak uchopuje text jako materiální artefakt, jehož podoba měla základní implikace pro zacházení s ním, k čemuž je využit koncept rozšířené kognice.

Abstract:

This thesis takes into consideration some theories from the area of cognitive sciences in generally and cognitive science of religion in particularly and their potential for interpretation historical literary sources. The literary sources are represented by three passages from the apocryphal acts of apostles. The stand point of this thesis lies in the evolutionary behavioral perspective, from that the relation between evolution, history and literature in regard to the given period is analyzed. The central chapters four, five, and six take into account some cognitive theories of ritual, hypothesis on memorability of minimal contraintuitive representations, and conception of extended cognition in relation to the selected passages from the Acts of John, Acts of Peter, and Acts of Paul. The first of these chapters investigates the text as a source of information about actual ritual action that is possible to analyze by using cognitive theories of ritual. Next chapter is concentrating on the text as a source of information about spreading of mental representations by using the hypothesis about memorability of minimal contraintuitive representations. The chapter six takes text as a material artifact, the appearance of which had a basic implications for manipulating with it. For this is used the concept of extended cognition.
