Migration as the theme of the pre-election campaign for a referendum on Brexit

Abstract:

Práce zkoumá téma migrace v předvolební kampani referenda o Brexitu. Cílem práce je zjistit, zda to, jak bylo omezení migrace prezentováno společnosti, odpovídá kritériím národního zájmu podle Petra Kratochvíla. První kapitola představuje teorii národního zájmu a kritéria jeho legitimity. Druhá kapitola uvádí, jak se od roku 2004 vyvíjela imigrace ze států Evropské unie do Velké Británie a jaký má migrace ekonomický dopad. Třetí kapitola provádí politický a mediální diskurz tématu migrace. Je představeno, jak bylo omezení migrace prezentováno skupinami Vote Leave, Britain Stronger in Europe a jejich představiteli. Práce se také zabývá postojem reprezentantů Evropské unie k omezení imigrace do Spojeného království.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the issue of migration in the pre-election campaign of the Brexit referendum. The aim of the thesis is to find out whether the way in which the reduction of migration was presented to society corresponds with the criteria of national interest according to Petr Kratochvíl. The first chapter presents the theory of national interest and the criteria of its legitimacy. The second chapter shows how immigration from the European Union to Great Britain has evolved since 2004 and what is the economic impact of migration. The third chapter carries out a political and media discourse on migration. It is also explored how the migration restrictions were presented by Vote Leave, Britain Stronger in Europe and their representatives. The thesis also deals with the attitudes of EU officials to the reduction of immigration to the United Kingdom.
