Fototrofné sírne baktérie sú dôležité mikroorganizmy kvôli ich schopnosti oxidovať anorganické sírne zlúčeniny a fotosyntetizovať bez produkcie kyslíka. Vďaka ich jedinečnému metabolizmu sa mnohí výskumníci zaoberali ich využitím na odstránenie H2S z bioplynu keďže ide o kontaminant obmedzujúci použitie bioplynu ako obnoviteľného paliva. Phototrophic sulfur bacteria are important microorganisms due to their ability to oxidize inorganic sulfur compounds and photosynthesise without producing oxygen. Due to this unique metabolism, many researchers investigated their use to remove H2S from biogas as it is a contamination limiting the future use of biogas as renewable fuel.
