The audience of the soap opera "Ordinace v Růžové zahradě " and its gendered relatedness: an ethnographic study

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá genderovým vztahováním se publika české soap opery Ordinace v růžové zahradě (Surgery in the Rose Garden) k zobrazeným postavám, jejich charakterům a jednáním v souvislosti s vlastním vnímáním a produkováním genderu. Vychází z paradigmatu interpretativní sociologie (interpretative sociology) a využívá metod etnografického přístupu k genderu (West a Zimmerman 1987, česky 2008; Goffman 1989; Kessler and McKenna 1978). Teoreticky se opírá o genderové teorie publik tzv. ženských žánrů (Radway 1984, Modleski 2008, Ang 1985, Brunsdon 2003, Geraghty 2003) a o teorii sociální kritiky třídního vkusu v souvislosti s genderem (a social critique of the judgement of taste) (Bourdieu 2000). Výzkum proběhl v rozmezí let 2006 a 2011 a zaměřil se na divačky a diváky Ordinace v růžové zahradě ve městě Šumperk. Použitými metodami byly hloubkové rozhovory, skupinové rozhovory a zúčastněné pozorování. Výzkum se zaměřil i na část produkce soap opery, konkrétně na kreativní tým. Práce ukazuje, jakým způsobem diváctvo pracuje s genderovými kategoriemi a jak „předváděný“ (display) gender „dělá“ (doing) ve svém vlastním životě. Svou roli přitom hrají také další sociální faktory a signifikanty. Při spojení kategorií gender a třída se práce zaměřuje na utváření sociální hierarchie v souvislosti s vkusem a životním stylem. Zde dochází k překvapivému zjištění, kdy se ke sledování „femininního“ žánru veřejně hlásí tři muži z nižší třídy, což odporuje zjištěním Bourdieho, podle něhož muži z nižší třídy nejúzkostlivěji střeží svou maskulinitu. Disertace ukazuje okolnosti, za nichž k tomuto přiznání dochází. V souvislosti s genderovým vztahováním se vychází najevo, že ženy preferují nezávislé a emancipované hrdinky typu Sex ve městě. Disertační práce navíc odkrývá genderový paradox související se zobrazovaným tématem gynekologie. Divačky prostřednictvím soap opery získávají informace o svých tělech, což je emancipuje ve vztahu k lékaři_ce. Na druhou stranu však výběr řešení dané situace odbornými poradci vede k posilování mocenských pozic lékařů, souvisejících s mechanismy expertního vědění.

Abstract:

This dissertation deals with how the audience of the Czech soap opera “Ordinace v Ruzove zahrade” (Surgery in the Rose Garden) relates in a gendered way to the characters depicted, their personalities and agency in connection with their own perception and production of gender. It takes the paradigm of interpretative sociology for its starting point and uses the methods of ethnographic approach to gender (West and Zimmerman 1987, in Czech 2008; Goffman 1989; Kessler and McKenna 1978). Its theoretical background comprises of gender theories of audience of the “women’s genres” (Radway 1984, Modleski 2008, Ang 1985, Brunsdon 2003, Geraghty 2003) and a social critique of the judgment of taste (Bourdieu 2000). The research was conducted from 2006 to 2011 targeting the male and female viewers of Ordinace v ruzove zahrade in the city of Šumperk. The methods used were in-depth interviews, group interviews and participant observation. The research also concerned part of the production of this soap opera, particularly its creative team. The study shows how members of the audience work with gender categories and how they “doing” and “display” gender in their own lives. Other social factors and significants also play a role in this. By combining the categories of gender and class the study is focusing on how social hierarchy is built in connection with taste and lifestyle. Surprisingly it was found - contrary to Bourdieu - that three men from lower class openly declared their viewing of the “feminine” genre. The dissertation depicts the circumstances under which this confession was made. In connection with the gendered relatedness it has emerged that women prefer independent and emancipated heroines such as those of the Sex and the City. Moreover, the dissertation exposes the gender paradox connected with the depiction of the topic of gynecology. Female viewers acquire information about their bodies via the soap opera, which emancipates them in relation to their doctors. On the other hand, however, the solution to the given situation with expert advisers leads to the strengthening of power positions of doctors linked with mechanisms of expert knowledge.
