Fear and anxiety at school

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je zjistit, zda úzkostní žáci prožívají větší strach a vyšší stresovou reakci při zátěžových situacích než žáci neúzkostní. Zabývá se dále tím, zda jsou učitelé schopni rozpoznat u svých žáků projevy strachu a úzkosti a jaké využívají při práci s těmito žáky vyučovací metody. Práce se v teoretické části věnuje charakteristice základních pojmů, jako jsou emoce, problematika strachu a úzkosti ve škole a fungování tzv. osy HPA. V praktické části je využita triangulace metod. Nejprve jsou použity tři druhy dotazníků: Dotazník Piers-Harris2, který měří sebepojetí dětí a adolescentů, dotazník B - J.E.P.I. měřící osobnost dle Eysencka a Dotazník MV6, který měří školní výkonovou motivaci. Na základě výsledků těchto dotazníků je u vybraných jedinců následně proveden odběr slin a jejich analýza, u které je zkoumána hladina stresového hormonu kortizolu při různých školních situacích. Z kvalitativních metod je zvolen polostrukturovaný rozhovor, který je uskutečněn se dvěma učiteli, kteří tyto žáky vyučují. Náš výzkum ukázal, že nelze říci, že by úzkostné děti prožívaly větší strach či vyšší stresové reakce v zátěžových situacích než děti neúzkostné. Z naší výzkumné sondy dále vyplývá, že učitelé umějí dobře rozpoznat projevy strachu a úzkosti u svých žáků a využívají vyučovací metody, které se jim v praxi osvědčují. Bylo zjištěno, že školní strach je velmi variabilní veličinou.

Abstract:

The aim of this diploma thesis is to find out whether anxious pupils experience greater fear and a higher lever of stress in demanding situations than pupils without anxiety issues. It also deals with whether teachers are able to recognize fears and anxieties in their pupils and what teaching methods they use when working with these pupils. In theoretical part of this thesis the aim is to define the basic concepts, such as emotions, fear and anxiety at school and the functioning of the so-called HPA axis. Practical part uses triangulation methods. First three types of questionnaires were used:The Piers-Harris 2 questionnaire, which measures the self-concept of children and adolescents, questionnaire B - J.E.P.I. measuring personality according to Eysenec and Questionnaire MV6, which measures school performance motivation. Based on the results of these questionnaires, the saliva sampling and analysis, which investigates the level of cortisol stress hormone in various school situations was carried out on the selected individuals. From the qualitative methods a semi-structured interview was carried out with two teachers who deals with these pupils. Our research has shown that it is not possible to say, that anxious children are experiencing greater fears and higher level of stress in stressful and demanding situations than children without anxiety. Our research probe also shows that teachers are able to recognize fears and anxieties in their pupils and use in practice proven teaching methods. It has been proven that fear is very variable magnitude.
