Reflections of Slovakia and Slovaks in the Czech non-Communist newspapers during the Crisis of 1947

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce analyzuje reflexi slovenské problematiky během roku 1947 v denících Lidová demokracie a Svobodné noviny. Do komplexu slovenské problematiky spadá politická a sociální situace na Slovensku, charakteristika Slováků a otázka česko-slovenského soužití po druhé světové válce. V roce 1947 přerostla trvalá sociální a politická krize na Slovensku hranice regionu. Stala se ohrožením existence Československa. Z jejího vyvrcholení a řešení profitovali komunisté. Práce si krom analýzy slovenské problematiky klade za cíl, jak zkoumané deníky – důležití zastánci liberální demokracie – lavírovaly mezi dvěma ohroženími pluralitního systému, tedy mezi faktickou „slovenskou krizí“ a mezi jejím mocenským zneužitím komunisty. Práce je přínosem do živé diskuse o nástupu totalitního režimu v Československu.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis analyses the reflection of Slovak issues during the year 1947 in the dailies Lidová demokracie (Folk Democracy) and Svobodné noviny (Independent Newspapers). The complex of Slovak issues contains the political and social situation in Slovakia, the charasteristic of the Slovaks and the issue of Czech-Slovak coexistence after the Second World War. In 1947 the lasting social and political crisis in Slovakia exceeded the borders of the region. It became the threat for the existence of Czechoslovakia. The communists benefited from its culmination and solution. Apart from the analysis of the Slovak issues the thesis tries to outline how the mentioned dailies – important supporters of the liberal democracy- were caught between two threats of the pluralist system, between the actual „Slovak crisis“ and its abuse by the communists. The thesis is the contribution to the live discussion about the emergence of the totalitarian system in Czechoslovakia.
