Predicting bank failure

Abstract:

Tato práce má za cíl posoudit využití algoritmů strojového učení pro predikci selhání bank, a to prostřednictvím analýzy teoretických aspektů, literární rešerše, a také implementace vlastní metodologie tvorby tzv. modelů včasného varování (early warning models). V empirické části práce používám metodu podpůrných vektorů (support vector machines) k tvorbě modelu, který dokáže úspěšně rozlišit mezi stabilní bankou a bankou, která potenciálně zkrachuje. Quinlanovy C5.0 rozhodovací stromy byly použity pro výběr důležitých proměnných. Výstupem práce jsou dva modely, které doporučuji využívat komplementárně jako modely včasného varování. Nejlepší specifikace dokáže správně klasifikovat 99.12 % z celkového počtu bank. K vypracování empirické části jsem použil panelová data ze západoevropského regionu, obsahující podílové ukazatelé CAMEL a pokrývající období let 2011 až 2019.

Abstract:

This work aims to assess the use of machine learning algorithms in bank failure prediction. In addition to a theoretical overview and review of the relevant literature, for this purpose, I implement my methodology of creating an early warning model (EWM). Specifically, in the empirical part of the thesis, I employ support vector machines (SVMs) to develop the predictive model, which is expected to distinguish between stable banks and banks that will potentially fail. Quinlan's C5.0 decision trees were used for selecting the most important variables to the model. As a result, two specifications of SVM-based models are recommended to be used complementary as EWMs. The best of them exhibits a 99.12 % overall forecasting accuracy. The Western-European banking panel data, taken from 2011-2019 and containing financial ratios resembling the components of the CAMEL framework, has been exploited.
