Phylogeny, systematics and ecology of spongobiotic shrimps (Caridea: Palaemonidae)

Abstract:

The present dissertation deals with the systematics and phylogeny of the shrimps Palaemonidae symbiotic with marine sponges (Porifera). The systematic part of the present study covers descriptions of five new taxa, i.e. a new species of Periclimenoides from Taiwan, a new genus and species Kaviengella jeffkinchi from Papua New Guinea (PNG), and 3 new species of the rare genus Onycocaridella, revealed from the revision of the genus. The two latter studies were supported by molecular analyses. Two further studies cover together 15 new records of spongobiotic palaemonids of Taiwan, comprising the genera Anchistioides, Apopontonia, Nippontonia, Orthopontonia, Periclime-naeus and Thaumastocaris. The main study of the dissertation is devoted to the general phylogeny of the complex of spongobiotic genera of palaemonid shrimps, covering 145 specimens of 27 genera (out of 29 described). Analyses include both endo- and ectosymbionts, and also a small series of ascidiobiotic species of the otherwise spongobiotic Periclimenaeus. The 4-gene analysis (with further 54 specimens of non-spongobiotic palaemonids) confirmed the polyphyly of the spongobiotic palaemonids, separating 6 ecto-biotic lineages: (1) Anchistioides, (2) Hamiger, (3) Mesopontonia monodactylus, and (4) separately: Periclimenes incertus, P. colesi, P. forcipulatus). The endo-spongobionts form two monophylies: (1) the minor clade (Apopontonia, Climeniperaeus, Paraclimenaeus, and Unesconia); (2) the major ('crown') clade (Anisomenaeus, Epipontonia, Exopontonia, Holthuisaeus, Kaviengella, Nippontonia, Onycocaridella, Onycocaris, Onycomenes, Orthopontonia, Periclimenaeus, Periclimenoides, Plesiomenaeus, Poripontonia, Thaumastocaris, Typton, Typtonoides, Typtonomenaeus, and Typtonychus). The two-gene phylogeny of the 'crown' clade (145 specimens) revealed Pseudoclimenes spm. genetically identical with Thaumastocaris (needs further revision), and three polyphyletic genera: Typton (3 lineages), Epipontonia (3 lineages), and Periclimenaeus (4 lineages). The pantropical distribution, with the main diversity in the Indo-West Pacific (IWP), is recorded for Typton (1 lineage) and Periclimenaeus (4 lineages). The whole diversity of almost 20 analysed ascidiobiotic Periclimenaeus specimens (incl. 6 Atlantic ones) evolved via the single host-switching event in the IWP region, and subsequently entered the Atlantic. The present ancestral state reconstruction shows two main scenarios of the IWP spongobionts dispersal into the Atlantic: (1) from IWP though the eastern Pacific (EP) to the western Atlantic (WA) and the eastern Atlantic (EA; Typton, Periclimenaeus); or (2) alternatively for P. caraibicus-echinimanus complex: from IWP to EA, then through WA and EP again to IWP. An additional study deals with a molecular analysis of a series of deep-water palaemonid shrimps of different genera; the study revealed and described a new species of Amphipontonia niugini from PNG, and proposed some partial taxonomic rearrangements; the indirect aim was to obtain a series of DNA sequences from deep-sea taxa used subsequently in the above-mentioned phylogeny of spongobionts on background of other symbiotic palaemonids.

Tato disertační práce se zabývá systematikou a fylogenezí krevet čeledi Palaemonidae symbiotických s mořskými houbovci (Porifera). Systematická část této studie zahrnuje popis pěti nových taxonů, tj. nového druhu Periclimenoides tyrannodentatus z Taiwanu, nový rod a druh Kaviengella jeffkinchi z Papuy Nové Guineje (PNG) a 3 nové druhy vzácného rodu Onycocaridella odhalené v rámci revize rodu. Dvě poslední studie byly podpořeny výsledky molekulárních analýza. Dvě další studie uvádějí celkem 15 spongobiontních druhů představující nové nálezy pro Taiwan, zahrnující rody Anchistioides, Apopontonia, Nippontonia, Orthopontonia, Periclimenaeus a Thaumastocaris. Stěžejní studie disertační práce je věnována obecné fylogenezi komplexu spongobiontních rodů krevet Palaemonidae žijících v symbióze s mořskými houbovci, zahrnující 145 exemplářů 27 rodů (z 29 popsaných). Analýzy obsahují jak endo-, tak i ektosymbionty, ale i malou sérii ascidiobiontních druhů z převážně spongobiontního rodu Periclimenaeus. Čtyřgenová analýza (s dalšími 54 vzorky nespongobiontních druhů čeledi) potvrdila polyfylii spongobiontních forem, přičemž bylo odděleno 6 ektobiontních linií: Anchistioides, (2) Hamiger, (3) Mesopontonia monodactylus, a (4) odděleně: Periclimenes incertus, P. colesi, a P. forcipulatus. Endo-spongobionti tvoří 2 monofylie: (1) minor klád (Apopontonia, Climeniperaeus, Paraclimenaeus, a Unesconia); (2) hlavní ("korunní") klád (Anisomenaeus, Epipontonia, Exopontonia, Holthuisaeus, Kaviengella, Nippontonia, Onycocaridella, Onycocaris, Onycomenes, Orthopontonia, Periclimenaeus, Periclimenoides, Plesiomenaeus, Poripontonia, Thaumastocaris, Typton, Typtonoides, Typtonomenaeus, a Typtonychus). Dvougenová fylogeneze major kládu (145 exemplářů) odhalila vzorek Pseudoclimenes jako geneticky identický s Thaumastocaris (vyžaduje další revizi), a tři polyfyletické rody: Typton (3 linie), Epipontonia (3 linie) a Periclimenaeus (4 linie). Pantropické rozšíření je zaznamenáno u rodů Typton a Periclimenaeus, s hlavní diverzitou v Indo-západotichomoří (IWP). Všech 20 alyzovaných ascidiobiontních Periclimenaeus (včetně 6 atlantských) se vyvinulo v důsledku jediné události změnou hostitele (host-switching) v regionu IWP a následně se rozšířili i do Atlantiku (1 linie). Na základě ancestrální analýzy znaků lze vytýčit dva hlavní scénáře historického šíření spongobiontů z IWP do Atlantiku: (1) z IWP přes východní tichomoří (EP) do západního Atlantiku (WA) a východního Atlantiku (EA; Typton, Periclimenaeus); nebo (2) alternativně pro komplex P. caraibicus-echinimanus: z IWP do EA, poté přes WA a EP znovu do IWP. Poslední uvedená studie se zabývá molekulární analýzou série hlubinných krevet dané čeledi různých rodů; studie odhalila a popsala nový druh Amphipontonia niugini z PNG (hostitel není znám) a navrhla částečné taxonomické úpravy; nepřímým cílem bylo získat sérii sekvencí DNA z hlubinných taxonů k následnému použití ve výše uvedené fylogenezi spongobiotů na pozadí jiných symbiotických krevet čeledi Palaemonidae.
