Historical photographs in history textbooks as a tool of communist propaganda

Abstract:

Diplomová práce představuje studii, která reflektuje, jakým způsobem komunistický režim vybíral a využíval historické fotografie v učebnicích dějepisu pro účely své propagandistické činnosti. Studie je založena na sémiotickém rozboru historických fotografií v učebnicích dějepisu z let 1955 až 1989 v Československu. Předmětem analýzy jsou fotografie, které byly ve vybraném historickém období používány u témat z nejnovějších dějin. Jak se měnila intenzita propagandistických prvků a samotný výběr fotografií v reakci na změny v politické sféře či na dění v tehdejší společnosti. Význam studie je spatřován v představení doby komunismu z jiné perspektivy. Zároveň může pomoci pochopit, v čem minulé generace vyrůstaly a jak silné propagandě byly vystaveny. Teoretická část práce předkládá širší obraz tehdejších poměrů se zaměřením na kulturní politiku. Její významná část je věnována médiím, která propaganda využívala k šíření ideologie, a československé marxistické historiografie jakožto úvodu do problematiky o stranické interpretaci dějin.

Abstract:

The thesis presents a study that reflects how the communist regime selected and used historical photographs in history textbooks for its propaganda activities. The study is based on a semiotic analysis of historical photographs in history textbooks from 1955 to 1989 in Czechoslovakia. The subject of the analysis is photographs that were used in the selected historical period for topics from the most recent history. The study examines how the intensity of propaganda elements and the selection of photographs changed in response to changes in the political sphere or events in the society of the time. The importance of the study lies in presenting the era of communism from a different perspective. At the same time, it can help understand what the previous generations grew up with and how strong the propaganda they were exposed to was. The theoretical part of the thesis presents a broader picture of the conditions of the time with a focus on cultural policy. Its significant part is devoted to the media, which propaganda used to spread ideology, and Czechoslovak Marxist historiography as an introduction to the issue of party interpretation of history.
