Linguistic landscape: the presence of English and other languages in public space

Abstract:

Práce vychází ze sociolingvistického přístupu nazývaného jazyková krajina, který zkoumá výskyt a využití různých jazyků ve veřejném prostoru. Ve vybraných pražských lokalitách byly pořízeny fotografie nápisů a dalších typů textů, v nichž se objevují jiné jazyky, zvláště angličtina. Analýza shromážděného materiálu prokázala rozdíly mezi centrem a periférií, ale především doložila, že cizí, anglicko-jazyčné nápisy jsou určeny především cizincům a méně jinojazyčným obyvatelům Prahy, resp. České republiky.

Abstract:

The work is based on a sociolinguistic approach called linguistic landscape. It examines the presence and the use of different languages in public space. Photographs of signs and other types of texts were taken in selected locations in Prague where different languages appear, especially English. Analysis of the collected material showed differences between centre and periphery, but also showed that foreign, particularly English, signs are intended mainly for tourists rather than for Prague residents, respectively inhabitants of the Czech Republic.
