Changes in Czech fatherhood: generation differences in expression of father role

Abstract:

Výzkum se zabývá současným otcovstvím a proměnami otcovské role, především otcovstvím aktivním a otcovskou účastí. Hlavním cílem práce bylo zjistit, zda současný mediálně prezentovaný trend aktivního otcovství je založen na skutečné podobě současného otcovství nebo se jedná jen o uměle vytvořený konstrukt dnešní společnosti. Přehledová část práce se zabývá obecně otcovstvím jako fenoménem a konceptem otcovské účasti. V první části jsou popsány různé teoretické přístupy k otcovství, nastíněn stručný přehled jeho historického vývoje a také přehled nových vymezení a proměn otcovské role. Druhá polovina přehledové části je už konkrétně zaměřena na koncept otcovské účasti (father involvement), jeho nejvýznamnější modely, situaci v naší republice a na závěr je tu nabídnut přehled výzkumů, zabývajících se vlivem otcovská účasti na fyzický, kognitivní, emocionální a sociální vývoj dětí. Ve výzkumné části bylo zjišťováno, zda je nějaký rozdíl v otcovské aktivitě, účasti na péči o děti a vztahu k nim mezi otci mladšími (současné generace) a otci staršími (minulé generace). Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 151 českých mužů, kteří se stali otci v letech 1981 až 2010. Otcovská účast byla sledována pro předškolní období jejich dětí. Výsledků nasvědčují tomu, že české otcovství prošlo za uplynulých 29 let určitou generační proměnou, která se projevila především na jejich vztahu k dětem, který se stal bližším a vřelejším. Také se potvrdil předpoklad, že současná generace otců se zapojuje do péče o své děti více než generace předchozí. Na druhou stranu se neprokázalo, že by si dnešní otcové s dětmi více povídali, byli k nim více všímaví nebo s nimi měli méně konfliktní vztah než otcové starší. V závěru práce byl sestaven lineárně regresní model, který se pokusil nabídnout komplexnější pohled na aktivní otcovství. Tento model ukázal, že významnými prediktory pro zapojení se otců do péče o děti je právě míra vzájemné blízkosti a všímavosti k nim.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the current fatherhood and changes of paternal role, mainly active fatherhood and father involvement. The main aim of this work was to determine whether the current media trend of active fatherhood presented is based on the actual form of the present fatherhood or it is just an artificial construct of our society. Overview part of this thesis deals with fatherhood as a general phenomenon and concept of father involvement. The first section describes the various theoretical approaches to fatherhood, outlined a brief overview of the historical development and overview of the new definition of a changes of paternal role. The second part of the theory part was specifically focused on the concept of paternal involvement (father involvement), its most important models, the situation in our country and in the end there is offered a list of studies of its influence on physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of children. The research tried to find out whether there is any difference in paternal activity, participation in the care of children and the relationship between younger fathers (current generation) and older fathers (previous generation). The sample consisted of 151 Czech men who become fathers in the years 1981 to 2010. Father involvement was monitored for a period of pre-school children. Results suggest that the Czech fatherhood has undergone over the past 29 years a generational change that was reflected primarily in their relation to children, which became closer and warmer. It also confirmed the assumption that the current generation of fathers is more involved in their children's care than the previous generation. On the other hand, this study has not shown that today's fathers more talked with children , were more attentive to them or were with them in less conflictual relationship than older fathers. In conclusion, there was drawn linear regression model, which attempted to offer a more comprehensive view of active fatherhood. This model showed that significant predictors for involvement of fathers in child care are level of proximity and attentivness to them.
