Fragmentation of water macroinvertebrate populations

Abstract:

Sladkovodní bezobratlí se běžně vyskytují v přirozeně fragmentovaných stanovištích, které jsou obklopeny pro ně nehostinným terestrickým prostředím. Výměna jedinců mezi těmito stanovišti představuje významný proces ovlivňující populační dynamiku, neboť v případě malých izolovaných populací existuje, vzhledem k jejich nízké genetické diverzitě a vysoké míře inbreedingu, velké riziko extinkce. K běžným způsobům šíření vodních bezobratlých patří drift, protiproudový pohyb, let imag, zoochorie nebo anemochorie. Disperze může být do značné míry ovlivněna také přítomností bariér, jako jsou například přehradní nádrže, jezera, velké urbanizované plochy, určité typy geologického podloží nebo pobřežní vegetace a propustky. Kvantifikovat míru disperze na základě přímých metod (např. metoda zpětného odchytu značených jedinců) je v mnoha případech problematické, tudíž se disperzní schopnosti a genový tok často odhadují na základě genetické divergence populací. Údaje o genetické struktuře populací lze získat na základě analýz molekulárních markerů, přičemž v posledních letech jsou v studiích tohoto typu hojně využívány vysoce polymorfní mikrosatelity. Jedním z vhodných prostředí pro studium této problematiky jsou prameniště. Vzhledem k jejich prostorové izolovanosti a specifickým podmínkám prostředí lze očekávat, že populace druhů vázaných na tyto habitaty budou přirozeně fragmentované.

Abstract:

Freshwater invertebrates commonly occur in naturally fragmented habitats surrounded by an inhospitable terrestrial landscape. Movement of animals between these habitats is an important process influencing population dynamics because small and isolated populations are usually threatened by a high risk of extinction, due to their low genetic diversity and high inbreeding rates. The most common dispersal mechanisms for aquatic invertebrates are downstream drift, upstream movement, flight of adult insects, zoochory or anemochory. Some landspace barriers, such as reservoirs, lakes, large urbanized areas, some types of geological substratum, riparian vegetation or culverts, may play an important role in dispersal patterns. Measuring dispersal by direct methods (e.g. mark-recapture) could be problematic in many cases. Consequently, dispersal capabilities and gene flow are often estimated by methods based on population genetic structure. Recently, highly polymorphic microsatellites have become very popular as molecular markers for assessment of population genetic structure in such kind of studies. One of the suitable habitats for these studies is springs. Due to their space isolation and specific environmental conditions, it can be expected that populations of species associated with these habitats will be naturally fragmented.
