Truth and Communicability: Reality and Mathematical Discourse

Abstract:

Matematika je paradigmatem reality v tom smyslu, že je základní formou, která ukazuje možnosti existence v realitě - jak se jeví. Abych toto tvrzení doložil, systematicky přehodnocuji pojmy objekt, realita, pravda a existence. Moje argumentace se opírá o kantovské pojetí matematického poznání jako syntetického a priori a jeho vztah k našemu vrozenému časoprostorovému rámci. V tomto smyslu obhajuji transcendentální status matematiky. Toto tvrzení zdůvodňuji reinterpretací ontologie matematických objektů a tvrdím, že se jedná o abstraktní objekty, které jsou výsledkem sdělování apriorních intuic o prostoru a čase. Objektivita základní matematiky je zakořeněna v evolučních omezeních, která dávají vzniknout jakési matematické metarealitě. Objektivita pokročilé matematiky je navíc zaručena intersubjektivitou a sdělitelností matematických pojmů a propozic. Nakonec popisuji mechanismy, jimiž probíhá zdůvodňování v matematice, a vysvětluji, jak jsou k tomuto účelu využívány jazykové prostředky, jako je implicitní definice a idealizace.

Abstract:

Mathematics is the paradigm of reality in the sense that it is the fundamental form that shows the possibilities of existence in reality-as-it-appears. To substantiate this claim, I systematically rethink the concepts of object, reality, truth, and existence. My argument relies on the Kantian conception of mathematical knowledge as synthetic a priori and its relationship to our innate spatiotemporal framework. In this sense, I argue for the transcendental status of mathematics. I justify this claim by reinterpreting the ontology of mathematical objects, asserting that they are abstract objects which result from communicating a priori intuitions about space and time. The objectivity of basic mathematics is rooted in evolutionary constraints, which give rise to a sort of mathematical meta-reality. Furthermore, the objectivity of advanced mathematics is guaranteed by the intersubjectivity and communicability of mathematical concepts and propositions. Finally, I describe the mechanisms through which justification in mathematics takes place and explain how linguistic devices such as implicit definition and idealization are employed for this purpose.
