Spatial distribution of small scale vegetation diversity in the landscape

Abstract:

I přes značný zájem o druhovou diverzitu cévnatých rostlin není mnohdy její příčina uspokojivě vysvětlena. Také faktory, které ji ovlivňují, jsou velmi různorodé a projevují se na různých škálách. Pro výzkum na regionální škále je ale často potřeba získat množství vegetačních dat. Odhady diverzity druhů v rámci rostlinných společenstev bývají proto často prováděny na datech získaných z velkých vegetačních databází. Výsledky však mohou být zkreslené kvůli subjektivnímu sběru dat. V této dizertační práci jsem proto rozhodla nejprve míru možného zkreslení odhadů zjistit. Protože zemědělská krajina je v mírném pásmu běžně rozšířená, zaměřila jsem se v této dizertaci na její diverzitu a na některé ne zcela probádané faktory, které ji ovlivňují. Faktory ovlivňující počet druhů fungují od malých území po široké regiony. Jsou to např. výskyt druhů mimo svůj optimální biotop (spatial mass effect), struktura krajiny nebo zásoba druhů (species pool). Ví se, že struktura krajiny může ovlivňovat nejen gama, ale také alfa diverzitu, která je mimořádně velká v trávnících Bílých Karpat. Předpokládá se, že alfa diverzita trávníků tohoto území může být částečně vysvětlena výše zmíněnými faktory. Doposud však tento předpoklad nebyl testován. Navíc se neví, zda je vysoká alfa diverzita tohoto území typická pouze pro trávníky, nebo i pro jiné vegetační typy (např. lesní a ruderální vegetaci). Struktura krajiny ovlivňuje také množství ekotonů, které mohou teoreticky sloužit jako centra diverzity krajiny díky mísení druhů ze sousedních biotopů a výskytu specifických ekotonálních druhů. Pokud centra diverzity skutečně představují, mohou částečně zvyšovat druhovou diverzitu krajiny v případě, že její fragmentace nebude příliš silná. Cílem mé dizertační práce je odpovědět na tyto otázky: (1) Jak spolehlivé jsou odhady diverzity cévnatých rostlin odvozené z dat získaných z velkých vegetačních databází? (2) Může být alfa diverzita trávníků vysvětlena velkou zásobou druhů trávníků (species pool), výskytem druhů mimo svůj optimální biotop (spatial mass effect), velkými plochami trávníků nebo rozmanitostí krajiny? (3) Jaký je vztah mezi alfa a beta diverzitou trávníků? (4) Je velká alfa diverzita Bílých Karpat typická pouze pro trávníky, nebo i pro jiné vegetační typy? (5) Liší se alfa diverzita různých typů trávníků (xerofilních, sub-xerofilních, mezofilních a vlhkých) v závislosti na struktuře okolní krajiny? (6) Jsou ekotony místa zvýšené koncentrace druhů ve středoevropské krajině? Pokud ano, je jejich diverzita ovlivněna strukturní rozmanitostí ekotonu? Výsledky naznačují, že (1) některé odhady diverzity spočítané pomocí dat z velkých databází jsou nadhodnocené, konkrétně počty ohrožených druhů v rámci malých ploch a beta diverzita. (2) Alfa diverzita trávníků je ovlivněna strukturou krajiny. Konkrétně v Bílých Karpatech by alfa diverzita mohla být částečně vysvětlena velkou plochou trávníků v kombinaci s velkou rozmanitostí různých typů biotopů a malou geologickou pestrostí. (3) Velká alfa diverzita trávníků Bílých Karpat je kompenzována jejich malou beta diverzitou. (4) Velká alfa diverzita Bílých Karpat je typická pro trávníky a plevelovou/ruderální vegetaci. (5) Alfa diverzita sub-xerofilních a mezofilních trávníků je strukturou krajiny ovlivněna silněji než alfa diverzita suchých nebo vlhkých trávníků. (6) Ekotony nezvyšují alfa ani gama diverzitu zemědělské krajiny v jihovýchodní části České republiky, protože nejsou druhově bohatší než sousední plochy biotopů a neobsahují téměř žádné ekotonální druhy. Abstract:

Despite a considerable interest in the vascular plant species diversity, its cause is often not satisfactorily explained. Diversity can be influenced by various factors operating across spatial scales. For diversity research on a regional scale it is often necessary to collect a large amount of vegetation data. Estimation of plant species diversity is therefore often performed using the data obtained from large vegetation databases. Nevertheless, the results may be over- or underestimated due to non-systematic and non-random data sampling. In the present thesis I therefore first assessed the degree of the potential bias in diversity estimates based on vegetation databases. As agricultural landscapes constitute a widely represented landscape type of the temperate zone I focused on their diversity and on some factors that may potentially influence it. These factors can operate from local to regional scale. Examples are spatial mass effect, landscape structure or species pool. It is known that the landscape structure can affect not only gamma but also alpha diversity, which is extremely high in the grasslands of the White Carpathians, a Protected Landscape Area in the south-eastern Czech Republic. It is believed that grassland alpha diversity of that area may be partially explained by the aforementioned factors, but this assumption has not been tested yet. In addition, it was not known whether the high alpha diversity of this area is specific to grasslands or concerns also other vegetation types (e.g. forest and ruderal vegetation). The landscape structure also influences the amount of ecotones that can theoretically act as diversity hotspots thanks to the mixing of species from adjacent habitat patches as well as occurrence of specific ecotonal species. If they represent the hotspots, they can partly increase the gamma landscape diversity, provided the landscape fragmentation is not too strong. The aim of my dissertation thesis is to answer the following questions: (1) How reliable are the estimates of vascular plant species diversity based on vegetation plots obtained from large vegetation databases? (2) Can alpha diversity of grasslands be explained by the large pool of grassland species, spatial mass effect, large tracts of grasslands or landscape heterogeneity? (3) How is alpha diversity related to beta diversity of grasslands? (4) Is the high alpha diversity of the White Carpathians specific to grasslands, or does it also concern other vegetation types in this region? (5) Does the alpha diversity of different grassland types (xerophilous, sub-xerophilous, mesophilous and wet) respond differently to the structure of the surrounding landscape? (6) Are ecotones hotspots of diversity in central European landscape, and if so, does their alpha diversity depend on structural heterogeneity of the ecotone? Results indicate that (1) some diversity estimates calculated using large vegetation databases are overestimated, particularly the number of endangered species within small plots and beta diversity. (2) Alpha diversity of grasslands is affected by landscape heterogeneity. Specifically, in the White Carpathians it could be partly explained by large tracts of grasslands in combination with a great variety of different habitat types and low geological diversity. (3) High alpha diversity of the White Carpathian grasslands is compensated by their low beta diversity. (4) High alpha diversity in the White Carpathians is specific to grasslands and to some extent also to ruderal/weed vegetation. (5) Alpha diversity in sub-xerophilous and mesophilous grasslands is more susceptible to changes in landscape structure than alpha diversity in xerophilous or wet grasslands. (6) Ecotones do not increase alpha or gamma diversity of agricultural landscape in the south-eastern part of the Czech Republic, because they are not species richer than adjacent habitat patches and contain almost no ecotonal species.
