Czech Free Choice Indefinites

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá významem tzv. free choice indefinit, a to na podkladě dat ze současné češtiny (zájmena od k- základu s postfixem -koli(v)), dále jako FCI. Velká pozornost je věnována distribuci a interpretaci těchto výrazů v různých typech větného kontextu. FCI jsou pro teoretickou lingvistiku zajímavá tím, že jejich distribuce je omezená (jde o polaritní výrazy) a jejich interpretace systematicky proměnlivá (osciluje mezi existenční a univerzální kvantifikací). Tyto dva aspekty jejich užívání jsou podrobně prozkoumány pomocí korpusové sondy a experimentu s rodilými mluvčími; výsledkem je tzv. sémantická mapa pro česká FCI doplněná vlastní podrobnější typologií licencujících kontextů a souvisejících typů interpretace. Samotná analýza se pak soustředí na konkrétní distribuční kontrast mezi češtinou (-koli(v)) a angličtinou (any(-)): výskyt FCI ve skopu negace. Zatímco v angličtině je větná negace nejčastějším licencujícím prostředím pro FCI, v češtině se v tomto kontextu vyskytují sporadicky. Tato skutečnost je chápána jako důsledek negativní shody v češtině. FCI jsou formálně reprezentovány jako výrazy se sémantikou existenčního kvantifikátoru, které jsou licencovány downward entailing operátory, skopus negace je pro ně tedy vhodným prostředím pro výskyt. Česká FC indefinita ale vstupují ve skopu větné negace do kompetice o inserci s negativními indefinity (řada derivovaná prefixem ni- od k- základu). Negativní indefinita, tedy výrazy lexikálně specifikované výhradně pro kontext větné negace (v rámci negativní shody), FC indefinita v tomto prostředí vyblokují. Mechanismus této blokace je však ovlivňován dalšími faktory, proto není absolutní. V angličtině k blokování FC indefinit negativními indefinity nedochází, protože (standardní) angličtina negativní shodu nemá.

Abstract:

This thesis presents a study of meaning of so called free choice indefinites, on the basis of Czech synchronic data (pronouns derived by the -koli(v) affix from the k- root), in the following text as FCIs. A lot of attention is given to the distribution and interpretation of these items in different contexts. In general there are usually two reasons why the theoretical linguistics focuses on FCIs: their distribution is restricted (they meet the criteria for polarity items) and their interpretation changes in a systematic way (between the existential and the universal quantification). In this thesis I explore the two above mentioned aspects of the use of Czech FCIs, using the corpus survey and the experiment with native speakers, with the outcome of the semantic map and more detailed typology of licensing contexts and the corresponding interpretations. The analytic past of the thesis focuses on a specific distributional contrast between Czech (-koli(v)) and English (any(-)) FCIs: the use in the scope of negation. In English sentential negation is the most often licensing environment for FCIs, whereas in Czech their use in this context is rather rare. FCIs are formally represented as items the semantics of the existential quantifier. They are licensed by downward entailing operators, thus the scope of negation is a friendly environment for them. However, Czech FCIs in the scope of sentential negation enter the competition for insertion with negative indefinites (derived by ni- prefix from the k- stem). Negative indefinites are items lexically specified for the context of negation only (so called negative concord) and in this environment they block the use of FCIs. The mechanism of the blocking is being influenced by a set of factors, that’s why the blocking is not absolute. In English there is no negative concord (no negative indefinites series), the blocking is absent.
