Study of thermal decomposition processes of waste plastics containing halogenated additives

Abstract:

Kapalný produkt pyrolýzy plastů, včetně plastů z elektroodpadu, má potenciál být využit jako surovina pro rafinérsko-petrochemický průmysl. Zásadním problémem je však přítomnost halogenů, které po pyrolýze plastů přecházejí do tzv. pyrolýzního oleje. Halogeny přítomné v pyrolýzním oleji způsobují jeho degradaci a korozi všech dotčených zařízení, včetně navazujících petrochemických technologií. V rámci této diplomové práce je zmíněná problematika řešena v souvislosti s pyrolýzou plastů z elektroodpadu, jež obecně obsahují velké množství chloru a bromu. V první fázi této studie bylo provedeno několik sérií dehalogenačních experimentů s modelovou směsí obsahující 1,2-dichlorethan, 1,2-dibromethan, chlorbenzen a brombenzen. Experimenty probíhaly v průtočném reaktoru se speciálním ložem, které sloužilo k umístění dehalogenačního činidla. Použita byla činidla na bázi železa, hydroxidu vápenatého a hydrotalcitu CuMgAl. Na účinnost dehalogenace byl kromě vlivu dehalogenačních činidel sledován i vliv teploty (250, 350 a 450 °C). Výsledky dehalogenace z první fáze experimentů sloužily jako podklad pro realizaci druhé fáze experimentů, v níž byla studována pyrolýza plastů z elektroodpadu s tzv. on-line dehalogenací. Kombinací aplikace krokové pyrolýzy a působení vybraného dehalogenačního činidla Ca(OH)2, umístěného v loži o teplotě 450 °C, se podařilo dosáhnout snížení obsahu Cl na 9,8 ? 1,3 mg l-1 a Br na 80,3 ? 10,7 mg l-1. Výsledky odpovídají účinnosti dehalogenace 99,3 % v případě Cl a 96,5 % v případě Br.

Abstract:

The liquid product of pyrolysis of plastics, including plastics from electronic waste, has the potential to be used as a raw material for the refinery-petrochemical industry. However, a fundamental problem is the presence of halogens, which after the pyrolysis of plastics pass into the pyrolysis oil. Halogens present in pyrolysis oil cause its degradation and corrosion of all affected equipment, including subsequent petrochemical technologies. As part of this diploma thesis, the mentioned problem is solved in connection with the pyrolysis of plastics from electronic waste, which generally contain a large amount of chlorine and bromine. In the first phase of this study, several series of dehalogenation experiments were performed with a model mixture containing 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,2-dibromoethane, chlorobenzene and bromobenzene. The experiments took place in a flow reactor with a special bed that served to place the dehalogenation agent. Agents based on iron, calcium hydroxide and CuMgAl hydrotalcite were used. Apart from their effect on dehalogenation efficiency, the effect of temperature (250, 350 and 450 °C) was also monitored. The dehalogenation results from the first phase of the experiments served as a basis for the realization of the second phase of the experiments, where the pyrolysis of plastics from electronic waste with on-line dehalogenation was studied. By combining the application of stepwise pyrolysis and the action of the selected dehalogenation agent Ca(OH)2, placed in a bed at a temperature of 450 °C, it was possible to reduce the content of Cl to 9.8 ? 1.3 mg l-1 and Br to 80.3 ? 10.7 mg l-1. The results correspond to a dehalogenation efficiency of 99.3 % in the case of Cl and 96.5 % in the case of Br.
