Design-based research of an ESP coursebook

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce představuje problematiku konstrukčního výzkumu jako relativně nového přístupu v pedagogickém výzkumu, jenž by mohl účinně překlenout propast mezi výzkumem a praxí ve formálním vzdělávání. Cílem této disertační práce bylo: 1) vytvořit učebnici pro výuku English for Information Technology, pro jejíž tvorbu dosud neexistují jasné pokyny či instrukce; 2) validovat stávající teorie tvorby učebnic pro výuku anglického jazyka, popřípadě teorie osvojování cizího jazyka; 3) vyvinout nové teorie tvorby učebnic pro výuku angličtiny pro specifické účely (ESP). V teoretické rovině práce upozornila na dosavadní stav konstrukčního výzkumu učebních materiálů pro výuku cizích jazyků a odhalila „bílá místa“ především v oblasti konstrukčního výzkumu učebnic pro výuku ESP, která se tak stala východiskem pro realizovaný výzkum. Teoretická část také vymezila konceptuální rámec tvorby sylabu a učebnic pro výuku ESP a procesu jejich hodnocení, ze kterého konstrukční výzkum učebnice vychází. Empirická část disertační práce představila metodologii konstrukčního výzkumu učebnice, interpretovala, porovnala a následně diskutovala výsledky výzkumných zjištění vyplývajících ze dvou realizačních fází výzkumného designu. Pro hodnocení učebnice byly zvoleny dva typy metod: 1) dotazníkové šetření zaměřené na hodnocení učebnice učiteli a studenty a 2) pre-testování a post-testování znalostí a dovedností studentů před a po používání dané učebnice. Výzkumného šetření se zúčastnilo deset učitelů anglického jazyka pro specifické účely Ústavu jazyků, tři učitelé odborných předmětů zaměřených na oblasti informačních technologií z různých ústavů Fakulty elektrotechniky a komunikačních technologií a 184 studentů prvního ročníku Fakulty informačních technologií Vysokého učení technického v Brně. Z výzkumného šetření vyplynuly požadavky na přepracování učebnice tak, aby co nejlépe vyhovovala jako učební prostředek pro cílovou skupinu studentů, a také určité společné a rozdílné priority učitelů a studentů při volbě vhodných učebních materiálů. Výsledky výzkumu potvrdily některé z teorií designu učebnic pro výuku anglického jazyka a ESP a umožnily vymezit konstrukční principy pro tvorbu učebnic pro výuku ESP.

Abstract:

This doctoral thesis frames the concept of design-based research as a relatively new approach in pedagogical research which could effectively bridge the gap between research and practice in education. The aim of the thesis was: 1) to design a coursebook English for Information Technology for the design of which there are no clear principles; 2) to validate the existing theories of English language teaching (ELT) coursebooks design or the theories of second language acquisition; 3) to develop new theories of English for specific purposes (ESP) coursebooks design. At the theoretical level, the thesis drew attention to the current state of design-based research of foreign language learning materials and revealed “research gaps” especially in the field of ESP coursebooks design-based research, which became the research starting point. The theoretical part also defined the conceptual framework of syllabus design and ESP coursebooks design and evaluation, which formed the basis of the ESP coursebook design-based research. The empirical part of the thesis presented methodology of the coursebook design-based research, interpreted, compared, and discussed the research findings. Two types of methods were chosen for the coursebook evaluation: 1) a questionnaire survey focused on the coursebook evaluation by teachers and students and 2) pre-testing and post-testing of students’ knowledge and skills before and after using the coursebook. The research participants were ten ESP teachers of the Department of Foreign Languages, three teachers of specialized subjects focused on information technology from various departments of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication and 184 first-year students of the Faculty of Information Technology at Brno University of Technology. The research findings revealed requirements for the coursebook redesign so that it would be the most appropriate teaching and learning tool for the target group of students as well as teachers’ and students’ common and different preferences in choosing ESP learning materials. The research results validated some of the theories of ELT and ESP coursebooks design and made it possible to define design principles for ESP coursebooks design.
