Male-Female Relationships in Short Fiction by Ernest Hemingway

Abstract:

The primary goal of this diploma paper is the analysis of male-female conflicts and breakups in the short fiction written by an American writer Ernest Hemingway. The literary interpretations and analyses of the particular short stories were confronted with the critical works of some well-known literary critics who are writing about this topic. The work is divided into theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part briefly deals with Hemingway's specific way of writing. This part presents as well the types of story characters, themes and the literary influences upon the author's writing. In this theoretical part there is also some information about modernism in American and European literature. The practical part analyzes in detail the chosen short stories. In the analyses it was predominantly used the psychological point of view. This work intends to present the author's short fiction as this stands in comparison with his novels more in background

Abstract:

Cieľom danej diplomovej práce je analýza partnerských nezhôd a rozchodov v poviedkovej tvorbe amerického spisovateľa Ernesta Hemingwaya. Literárne interpretácie a analýzy jednotlivých poviedok boli konfrontované s prácami známych literárnych kritikov zaoberajúcich sa danou problematikou. Práca je rozdelená na teoretickú a praktickú časť. Teoretická časť bližšie pojednáva o Hemingwayovom špecifickom spôsobe písania, o literárnych vplyvoch na jeho tvorbu, ako aj o charakteristike tém a postáv vystupujúcich vo vybraných poviedkach. Teoretická časť sa taktiež stručne zaoberá témou modernizmu v americkej ale i európskej literatúre. Praktická časť bližšie analyzuje vybrané poviedky, a to najmä s uplatnením psychologického postupu. Táto práca si kladie za cieľ priblížiť autorovu poviedkovú tvorbu, ktorá v porovnaní s jeho románovou tvorbou stojí viac v ústraní
