Anthropology of Tourism: Souvenirs in Brno

Abstract:

Předkládaná bakalářská práce se zabývá etnografickou analýzou trhu se suvenýry ve městě Brně, jakožto téma propojující odvětví antropologie turismu, materiální kulturu, ale i ekonomickou a symbolickou antropologii. Úvodní teoretické pozadí je čerpáno z antropologie turismu, kde je pozornost zaměřena na turismus ve městě Brně, turistické trasy v jeho historickém centru a na identifikaci konkrétních prodejen suvenýrů ve městě (za pomocí terénního výzkumu). Navazující část je pak vztažená přímo k suvenýrům s podrobnějším popisem jednotlivých typů suvenýrů a doložením jejich fotografickými příklady z města Brna. Dále je pozornost zaměřena na funkce, které suvenýry mohou plnit, s důrazem na jejich význam jako symbolu a komodity. V případě symbolu jsou za pomocí internetové rešerše obrázků identifikovány přední symboly města Brna a konfrontovány s jejich (možným) reálným odrazem v suvenýrech. Význam suvenýrů jako komodity je také podrobněji rozveden za pomocí příslušné literatury a na základě veřejně-politické teorie doplněn výpověďmi dvou informantů jako představitelů veřejné a soukromé sféry zaangažovaných do tvorby politiky a prodeje suvenýrů. V závěru jsou pak získané poznatky shrnuty a diskutovány včetně závěrečného doporučení.

Abstract:

Submitted bachelor thesis deals with an ethnographic analysis of the souvenir market in the Brno city, as a topic interconnecting the field of tourism anthropology, material culture including economic and symbolic anthropology too. The source of the initial theoretical background is based on tourism anthropology, with the focus on tourism in the Brno city, real touristic routes in its historical centre and the identification of concrete souvenir shops in the city (based on a terrain survey). The following part is directly concerned with souvenirs, with detailed description of particular types of souvenirs and an photographic illustration of real souvenirs from Brno. Next, the attention is focused on the functions that souvenirs perform with the stress on their meaning as a symbol and a commodity. In case of a symbol, the top symbols of the city are identified through the internet image research and compared with their (possible) reflection in real souvenirs. The meaning of souvenir as a commodity is analysed with help of the literature too and based on public policy theory enhanced with the responses of two informants as the actors of public and private sector being involved in souvenir policy formulation and distribution. Finally, all the results are summarized and discussed with the final reccomendation included.
